The 3rd Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Souleiman Hassan Waberi has said he is happy that finally the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be hosted in the CECAFA Zone.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President announced on Wednesday after an executive committee meeting held in Cairo, Egypt that the Pamoja bid that involves Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania had won the bid to host the AFCON 2027.

The biggest football showpiece in the African continent will be returning to East Africa after it was last hosted in the Zone in 1976 in Ethiopia

” The granting of CAN 2027 to the three countries of the CECAFA Zone Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania gives me a feeling of pure happiness and obvious pride in my capacity as Vice President of CAF representative of this geographical sector, ” said Waberi.

Waberi, who is also President of the Djibouti Football Federation made it clear that this victory is all the more historic for the CECAFA Zone which has not had the honor of organising the continental tournament for 47 years since the last CAN in our sector dates back to 1076 in Ethiopia.

” My congratulations to the three countries for having presented an application file that is remarkable in every way, and my sincere thanks to the members of the executive committee for their choice which will boot the development of football in our area, ” added Waberi.

The other nations in the CECAFA Zone that have hosted the AFCOn before include ; Sudan (1959, 1970) and Ethiopia in 1962 and 1968.

It is now official the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 will be staged jointly in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The Pamoja Bid, representing Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania was this afternoon announced as having been successful by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF announced the winners of the bids for the 2025 and 2027 AFCON edition after an executive meeting chaired by the President, Patrice Motsepe held in Cairo, Egypt today.

While Morocco was awarded hosting rights for the AFCON 2025, the Pamoja bid won the AFCON 2027 hosting right.

Wallace Karia, President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and also President of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) said he was so happy that finally AFCON will come to East Africa. ” We thank the governments of the three countries and all the people who have contributed to the Pamoja bid winning, ” added Karia.

Presidents of the Uganda FA and Kenya FA, Moses Hassim Magogo and Nick Mwendwa respectively were also in attendance during the announcement of the bid winners in Cairo. Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament in Uganda also attended.

Besides the Pamoja bid, the other countries that were vying for the privilege to host AFCON 2027 included; Algeria, Egypt, Senegal and Botswana. But in the last few days Algeria announced their withdrawal.
