Ethiopia defeat Guinea Bissau in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier

Ethiopia have defeated Guinea Bissau 1-0 in a Group A match in the on-going FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier.

The Walia Ibex scored through Ramkel James after 27 minutes in a match they hosted on Wednesday at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

Abduselam Yusuf curved in a free-kick that Ramkel James made no mistake nodding past the Guinea Bissau goalkeeper. Ethiopia who are placed fifth in the Group pushed forward in search of more goals, but failed to score.

It was also Ethiopia’s second win in nine matches played, while hosts Djibouti who are bottom of the same Group lost 3-0 against Egypt in a match played in Casablanca, Morocco.

A brace by Muhamed Salah and another by Ibrahim Adel Mohamed Hassan were enough for Egypt who qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In a late night match played at the New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, Tanzania suffered a 1-0 defeat to Zambia in a Group E match to dent their hopes.

After a goalless first half, Fashion Sakala netted for Zambia after 75 minutes. The defeat and Niger’s 3-1 win over Congo Brazzaville sends Taifa Stars to third place with 10 points, while Niger climbed ti second place with 12 points. Morocco who have also booked a ticket to the FIFA World Cup have played seven matches and accumulated 21 points.

Action continues on Thursday for teams in the CECAFA Zone with Burundi hosting Kenya in a Group F match, while Somalia take on Algeria and Uganda play away to Botsawana in Group G matches.

Kenya pick huge win, Rwanda triumph in Soweto

The Harambee Stars of Kenya have humbled Seychelles 5-0 in a Group F match of the on-going FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

After falling 3-1 to The Gambia few days ago in Nairobi, the Harambee Stars team leg by skipper Michael Olunga came all out to wallop Seychelles at the Kasarani Stadium on Tuesday.

Rambok Ryan Wesley Ogam gave the hosts the lead after 7 minutes, and Collins Sichenie made it 2-0 after 35 minutes.

The Seychelles team tried to fight back, but failed to beat the Harambe Stars defending line. Ogam netted his second goal of the day after 38 minutes, before Olunga converted a penalty five minutes onto added time.

After recess Olunga nodded in past Seychelles goalkeeper Romeo Robertson Padayachy to make it 5-0 after 67 minutes.

In Group C Amavubi Stars picked a 1-0 win away to Zimbabwe in a match played at the Orlando Stadium in the township of Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. Gilbert Mugisha netted the lone goal after 40 minutes. Rwanda  moved to third place with 11 points behind South Africa and Benin.

Two other teams from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Zone that were in action early in the day Ethiopia and Tanzania suffered defeats.

A 10-man Niger team defeated Tanzania 1-0 in a Group E match played at the New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar. Daniel Sosah scored after 58 minutes, before Boureima Kalakore was sent-off.

Ethiopia suffered a 2-0 away defeat to Sierra Leone in a Group A match. Momoh Kamara and Alhassan Koroma scored the goals for Sierra Leone.

Later in Group B ties Sudan suffered a 1-0 defeat to Togo, while South Sudan held Mauritania to a goalless. Burundi also lost 2-0 away to The Gambia in a Group F tie.

Uganda Cranes coach Put praises team after stopping Somalia

The head coach of Uganda Cranes, Paul Put has praised his players after registering a 2-0 win against Somalia in a Group G match of the FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday.

Allan Okello and Jude Ssemugabi netted first half goals to ensure Uganda collected maximum points in a match played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, Namboole.

“The players have continued to work hard and I am very happy that they scored two goals and defended well. We have two more group games in October and we must remain focused,” said Put.

Uganda Cranes two wins against Mozambique and Somalia in few days has brightened their chances of getting close to FIFA World Cup 2026.

Algeria who drew goalless with Guinea on Monday lead Group G with 19 points, while Uganda are in second place with 15 points. Mozambique in third place also have 15 points, while Guinea have 11 points in 4th place, Botswana and Somalia in fifth and sixth places respectively.

In October Uganda will play two away matches to Botswana and Algeria to decide if they earn direct qualification or qualify for a place to face-off in the inter-confederation play-off for a slot.

But the match between Algeria and Somalia will also be another decider if the Desert Fennecs book a slot before they host Uganda in the last match of the group.

Nine teams from Africa will automatically qualify for the final tournament and one from the inter-confederation play-off slot for the FIFA World Cup 2026 to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Uganda win, Tanzania pick late draw in FIFA World Cup qualifiers

The Uganda Cranes were in scoring mood humbling Mozambique 4-0 in a Group G match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier played on Friday night.

After a goalless first half, Allan Okello gave the hosts the lead after 47 minutes. The SC Vipers forward hit a hard shot from outside the box to beat Mozambique’s goalkeeper Ivane Carminio Francisco.

Later Mozambique’s Geny Catamo had his long shot miss the target after 52 minutes. But the home side continued to push forward before Rogers Mato got his name on the score sheet to make it 2-0.

Mato received a neat pass from Steven Mukwala and beat one defender before beating the Mozambique goalkeeper after 70 minutes. Mato netted his second goal of the night 14 minutes later with a well taken half volley.

At the stroke of full time defender Elio Capradossi also inked his name on the score sheet. It was a sweet revenge for Uganda who lost 3-1 to the same team in March this year in a match played in Cairo, Egypt.

The win sends Uganda to second place with 12 points, while Algeria who stopped Botswana lead with 18 points. In a second Group G match also played in Kampala Somalia suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea.

In a Group E away match played Tanzania picked a late 1-1 win against Congo Brazzaville to remain in second place. Decham Moussavou gave the hosts the lead, but Selemani Mwalimu leveled matters after 84 minutes.

In other matches played CECAFA teams suffered defeats with Kenya suffering a 3-1 defeat to The Gambia in a Group F match played in Nairobi, while South Sudan also lost 4-1 to DR Congo in a Group B match played at the Juba National Stadium.

Djibouti who were reduced to 10-men after Yabe Siad Isman was sent off suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in a Group A encounter, while Senegal saw off Sudan 2-0 in a Group tie. Burundi and Ethiopia suffered 1-0 and 2-0 away defeats to Ivory Coast and Egypt in Group F and Group A matches respectively.

Uganda recalls legend Onyango ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers

Uganda Cranes experienced goalkeeper Denis Onyango has been recalled from retirement ahead of the next two matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.

Head coach Paul Put named the Mamelodi Sundowns shoot stopper on his squad on Wednesday ahead of the two Group G matches against Mozambique and Somalia.

Onyango who retired from the national team in April 2021 after the Cranes failed to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is part of the 28-man squad.

Uganda who are placed 4th in the group will host second placed Mozambique on September 5th, and three days later face Somalia at the same Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The coach has also recalled South African based goalkeeper Salim Jamal Omar Magoola and Joseph Mpande who plies his trade in the Vietnam League.

Kenya’s head coach Benni McCathy also named his squad on Wednesday ahead Kenya’s Group F home game against The Gambia on September 5th.

The other teams from the CECAFA Zone who will be in action on September 5th include Somalia hosting Guinea in Kampala, while South Sudan also play host to DR Congo.

Djibouti who are bottom in Group A will face Burkina Faso, while Tanzania will take on Congo Brazzaville in a Group E tie.

Sudan will hope to return to winning ways when they take on Senegal in a crucial Group B match, while Burundi play away to Ivory Coast in Group F. Ethiopia and Rwanda will also be away to Egypt and Nigeria respectively.
