Uganda tops CECAFA Zone in latest FIFA rankings
Uganda has remained the top ranked nation in the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) region, according to the latest FIFA rankings.
The FIFA rankings released on December 21st, 2023 placed Uganda in the 92nd position and top in the CECAFA Zone with 1245.08 points.
After the recent defeat to Guinea in their opening group match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers and win over Somalia, Uganda did not improve in the rankings.
Kenya are the second ranked nation in the region and in 110th position in the world with 1181.92 points. Tanzania who qualified to play in the upcoming TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 in Cote d’Ivoire are placed third in the Zone and 121st in the world ranking with 1155.19 points.
The other teams ranked in their order in the CECAFA Zone include; Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia. Eritrea who are also part of the CECAFA Zone are not ranked because they have not participated in FIFA recognized tournaments for a long time.
The 2022 World Cup winners Argentina are ranked top in the FIFA world rankings with 1855.2 points, while Senegal are Africa’s top ranked team in 20th position.

The latest FIFA ranking show that Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have climbed to new positions.
According to the ranking released on Thursday by FIFA, Uganda has improved by five places to 90th position with 1257.64 points.
Uganda’s improvement in the rankings comes after the recent performance of the Uganda Cranes in the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers where they held South Africa to a 2-2 draw in Johannesburg, and defeated Congo Brazzaville 2-0 in a match played in Kampala.
The other teams from the CECAFA Zone that have improved in their rankings are Kenya and Tanzania as a result of their recent good performance in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Kenya have also climbed by six places to 102 points with 1208.96 points, while Tanzania improved by three places to 110th position with 1188.24 points.
Although Uganda remain top in the CECAFA Zone, Sudan (120) and Rwanda (130) are in fourth and fifth places respectively. Eritrea who are also from the CECAFA Zone are not ranked because of failure to participate in several FIFA organized tournaments.
According to the rankings World champions Argentina remain top of the log with 1889.02 points, while France are second with 1851.92 points. Morocco with 1676.14 points and placed 14th in the world rankings are Africa’s best ranked team.
