Uganda ejected on penalties in FIFA U-17 World Cup round of 16
Uganda Cubs have bowed out in the round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup in Doha, Qatar.
Handled by Coach Brian Ssenyondo, the Uganda Cubs put up a spirited fight against Burkina Faso drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes, and losing 5-3 on penalties in a match played at the Aspire Zone Complex Pitch 5 on Tuesday.
After a goalless first half where the two teams missed some good scoring opportunities, Burkina Faso got off the blocks a much more hungry team after recess.
But after Richard Okello coming close it was Arafat Nkoola who made sure he got his name on the score sheet for Uganda Cubs after 56 minutes with a well curved in shot that beat the Burkina Faso goalkeeper.
Ten minutes later Okello almost made it 2-0 for Uganda, but his shot missed the target from close range. The Burkina Faso side that eliminated Germany in the round of 32 tried to push forward in search of goals, but failed to beat the well organized Ugandan Cubs defending line.
After 77 minutes Uganda failed to defend well giving Alassana Bagayogo space to chest the ball and shot straight past Uganda’s goalkeper Edrisah Waibi.
During penalty kicks the Bukina Faso team was spot on scoring all the five against Uganda’s three. The West Africans will now face Italy at the quarter final stage.
The Uganda FA President Mosesa Hassim Magogo thanked the Uganda Cubs team for the good show at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. “Congratulations boys, you represented yourselves and your country very well on the biggest stage of football. You made your country happy, believe and most importantly very proud, Ugandan football will always remember and celebrate you,” said Magogo.
