Simba SC settle for second place to bag $1 million in CAF Confederation Cup
Simba SC have bagged $1 million after settling for second place in the 2024/2025 Total Energies CAF Confederation Cup.
After losing the first leg 2-0 away to Morocco’s RS Berkane, the Tanzania Premier League side put up a gallant show to draw 1-1 in the return leg played at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Sunday to loose 3-1 on aggregate.
Simba SC started on a high attacking in numbers and dominating play before taking the lead after 17 minutes. A well delivered assist by Elie Mpanzu was enough for Joshua Mutale to score and send the fans wild.
The Tanzanian side continued to press the Moroccan side with Ugandan International Steven Mukwala and right full back Shomari Kapombe keeping their defenders busy.
After recess Simba SC’s Yusuph Kagoma was sent off after 55 minutes after picking a second yellow card. The card gave the visitors as advantage. But Simba SC thought they had scored a second goal through Mukwala, but the VAR ruled it offside.
With the clock ticking away Soumaila Sidibe leveled matters for RS Berkane with a low drive to beat Simba SC goalkeeper Moussa Camara.
It was all celebration for the Moroccan side after the final whistle, while Simba SC will also smile away with a $1 million cash prize, while the winners take $2 million.
Another Tanzanian Premier League side Young Africans SC suffered defeat to USM Alger in the final of the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies CAf Confederations Cup.
CECAFA teams Nairobi United, Azam FC and Singida Black Stars FC all got off to a wrong start in the group stage of the 2025/2026 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
The reigning CECAFA Kagame Cup champions Singida Black Stars FC suffered a 2-0 away defeat to CR Belouizdad in Algeria on Saturday.
Abdennoriheb Belhocini and Abdelraouf Benguit scored for the home side at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers. Singida Black Stars FC tried to push forward, but failed to find goals.
On Sunday another Tanzanian side Azam FC suffered a 2-0 defeat to Maniena Union at the Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa. Balako Christian Panzi and Christopher Pindi netted for the DR Congo side.
Later on Sunday night a 10-man Nairobi Utd team suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Wydad AC at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
Ayoub Boucheta and Mohamed Bouchouari gave the Moroccan side a 2-0 first half lead. Mohamed Rayhi added the third goal, and Nairobi Utd’s Brian Mzee was sent off few minutes to the end of the match.
Action for the CECAFa teams returns this weekend with Azam Fc hosting Wydad AC on November 28th at the New Amaan Complex, while Singida Black Stars FC host AS Otoho, and Nairobi Untd host Maniema Union the next day.
CECAFA teams Azam FC and Nairobi United FC will face-off in the same group stage of the 2025/2026 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
The two teams were placed in Group B during the draw conducted at the SuperSport Studio in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon.
The Tanzania Premier League side Azam FC under the guidance of experienced coach Florent Ibenge were placed in Group B alongside Wydad AC (Morocco), AS Maniema Union (DR Congo) and new comers Nairobi United FC.
Singida Black Stars FC, the CECAFA Kagame Cup reigning champions have also been placed in Group C that has CR Belouizdad (Algeria), Stellenbosch FC (South Africa) and AS Otoho (Congo Brazzaville)
The draw was conducted by CAFs head of Competitions Division, Khaled Nassar and assisted by former internationals Christopher Katongo (Zambia) and Alex Song (Cameroon).
The group stage matches will be played from November 23rd to February next year. Egypt’s Zamalek FC won the 2024/2025 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

Group B: Wydad AC (Morocco), AS Maniema Union (DR Congo), Azam FC (Tanzania), Nairobi United FC (Kenya)
Group C: CR Belouizdad (Algeria), Stellenbosch FC (South Africa), AS Otoho (Congo Brazzaville), Singida Black Stars FC (Tanzania)
Group D: Zamalek, Al Masry (Egypt), Kaizer Chiefs FC (South Africa), Zesco United FC (Zambia)
Nairobi United FC have qualified for the group stage of the 2025/2026 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
The Kenya Premier League side edged Tunisian side Etoile Sportive du Sahel 7-6 on penalties after the home side had won the return leg 2-0 to level the aggregate 2-2.
The home side scored through Rayan Anen and substitute Ben Maazouz to give them another chance in the penalty shoot-out.
Nairobi United goalkeeper Kevin Oduor turned the hero after he saved the hosts’ seventh penalty before converting the decisive kick.
Nairobi United FC will now join two other teams Azam FC and Singida Black Stars FC (Tanzania) in the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
The other teams that have qualified include; Zamalek FC, Wydad AC, USM Alger, CR Belouizdad, Djoliba FC, San Pedro, Al Masry, Zesco Utd FC, Maniema Union FC, AS Otoho and Kaizer Chiefs FC.
Experienced coach Miguel Gamondi has guided Singida Black Stars FC to qualification for their first TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
The Argentine who signed a one year contract in August this year started his tenure by guiding Singida Black Stars FC to win the CECAFA Kagame Cup 2025.
On Saturday Singida Black Stars FC wrote their own history coming from a goal down in the return leg of the second preliminary round to beat 10-man Flambeu du Centre 3-1 and qualify for the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
David Irishura gave Flambeu du Centre the lead after 26 minutes at the Azam Complex Stadium. But after recess Horso Muaku leveled matters for Singida Black Stars FC.
In the 65th minute the home side earned a penalty after a deliberate handball in the box and the read card for the Burundian side. Zambian import Clatous Chama made no mistake from the spot. Idriss Diomande put the icing on the cake with a third goal in the 75 minutes.
Singida Black Stars FC went on to qualify on a 4-2 goal aggregate and now join other teams like Azam FC (Tanzania), Zesco FC (Zambia), Maniema Fc (DR Congo), USM Alger (Algeria), San Pedro (Ivory Coast) and Olympique de Safi (Morocco) in the group stage.
On Sunday Nairobi United FC who carry a 2-0 advantage will face Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia) in the return leg with any draw or 1-0 defeat being enough for them o book a place in the group stage.
