Burundi battle Uganda in CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship opening tie

The CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2025 finally kicks off this afternoon with Burundi facing reigning champions Uganda Crested Cranes at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Olivier Alian Niyungeko, Burundi’s head coach told Cecafaonline that although they expect a very tough encounter against Uganda, his team is well prepared.

“This is a kind of tournament where every match is very important and we want to make a good start,” says Niyungeko who will miss the services of Rah Roy Nzoyikorera who has been battling a fever since the team arrived in Tanzania.

Sheryl Botes Ulanda, Uganda Crested Cranes head coach also made it clear that what is important will be to have a good start in the tournament. “We need to approach every match strongly and starting with a win will give us a good start,” added Ulanda.

In their last meeting at the 2022 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship Uganda defeated Burundi 4-1 in the group stage and 3-1 in the final played at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

The second match of the day will see South Sudan face a tough test against the Twiga Stars of Tanzania. Fresh from recording two wins against DR Congo international friendly matches, coach Bakari Shime will expect some of his key forwards like Opa Clement Tukumbuke and Clara Cleitus Luvanga to be at their best to find the goals.

“We shall not underrate any team in this tournament,” says Shime. South Sudan who will reply on majority of the Yei Joint Stars players will also be hoping to make a good start.

The regional competition which has attracted five teams will be played on a round robin basis with all the teams playing four matches.

“We have had to push the kick-off by a day as the South Sudan team because of some challenges can only arrive on Wednesday,” says Yusuf Mossi, the Competitions Director of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).

“The competition with help our representatives to the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Tanzania prepare better and the other teams to get more exposure,” says the CECAFA Competitions Director Yussuf Mossi.

Tanzania are the winners of the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2025.

The Twiga Stars kept their 100% winning run after defeating Kenya 1-0 in their last match played at the Azam Complex on Saturday.

Saudi Arabia based forward Clara Luvanga netted the lone goal after the ball deflected off Kenya’s goalkeeper Lilian Onyango Awuor.

In the first half Opa Clement Tukumbuke had two scoring opportunities flash past the Kenyan goal, while Violet Nanjala Wanyonyi also came close for Harambee Starlets.

After the interval Tanzania started on a high and pushed forward before defender Ruth Mukalukho Ingosi and goalkeeper Awuor failed to communicate well as the ball needed a deflection to rest in the next.

Twiga Stars cheered on by the many home fans continued to push forward creating many scoring opportunities that they failed to take.

It was all celebration after the victory. “I am happy that we have worked hard to win the trophy which also motivates us before we travel for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco,” said a happy Twiga Stars captain Tukumbuke after the match.

In an earlier match South Sudan shocked Burundi 3-1. Mary Bol, Sumaya MaliliTaban and Nyama Nyamam Makuac Deng scored for South Sudan, while Rukiya Bizimana netted the lone goal for Burundi.

While Tanzania emerged winners and received a trophy and medals in the competition played on a round robin basis, Kenya received silver medals, while Uganda picked bronze medals for finishing third.

Hosts Tanzania face Kenya in CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship

It’s D-Day as the curtains will come down this evening when the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2025 comes to a climax at the Azam Complex, Tanzania.

Going into the final matches Burundi who shocked Uganda 1-0 in their opening match will face South Sudan in the first match, and after the Tanzania will face Kenya in a match that will determine the champion.

Interestingly Tanzania top the log with a better one goal advantage above Kenya who have also collected nine points from a possible three matches played. The Twiga Stars have netted 12 goals, while Harambee Starlets have romped in 11 goals.

Going into the match Tanzania can only afford a draw to lift the trophy, while Kenya need nothing less than a win.

Bakari Shime, the Twiga Star head coach told cecafaonline that the final match against Kenya will be a good ground to test several aspects for his player. “I know it will be a tough match and we must be at our best,” added Shime.

Harambee Starlets Head Coach Beldine Odemba is also optimisti her team can get the job done if they stick to the script. “This will be a very tough match, but we should not give them the spaces and still to our game plan,” added Odemba.

Mexican based forward and skipper Opa Clement Tukumbuke, the leading scorer in the tournament with five goals will lead the Twiga Stars I the hurnt for goals, while Martha Emedot and Violet Nanjala Wanyonyi will also lead Kenya.

“We are delighted that the tournament has been competitive and already 29 goals have been scored after eight matches. We are happy the tournament has given our CECAFA representatives Tanzania good ground to prepare ahead of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” says Yusuf Mossi, the CECAFA Competitions Director.

Twiga Stars maintain lead in CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship

Tanzania’s Twiga Stars have stopped 2022 champions Uganda Crested Cranes 2-0 to maintain their lead on the table standing in the on-going CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship.

Opa Clement Tukumbuke opened the scoring for the home side after 22 minutes after a defensive lapse by the Crested Cranes.

Captained by Zainah Namuleme, the Ugandan team continued to close gaps and created a few scoring opportunities through Sylivia Kabene.

After recess Twiga Stars increased their intensity, but the Crested Cranes defended well. Diana Msewa made it 2-0 for Tanzania after another lapse in defending by the Ugandan team.

Shime Bakari, the Twiga Stars coach praised his team for the god play against a well organized Ugandan side. “I am happy we have not conceded after three matches and now we must prepare for the last match against Kenya,” added the Tanzanian coach.

In an earlier match Kenya also maintained their 100% winning record with a 4-0 triumph against South Sudan in a match played at the Azam Complex.

Faith Mboya gave Harambee Starlets the lead after only 3 minutes. The South Sudan team defended in numbers and closed out Kenya’s attack till the interval.

In the second half Violet Nanjala Wanyonyi, Martha Amunyolet Emedot and Elizabeth Ochaka got their names on the score sheet to ensure Kenya collected another big win.

“I am happy that the team is working hard to score many goals and we hope to put up another good performance against Tanzania on Saturday,” said Kenya’s coach Beldine Lilian Odemba.

The Championship played on round robin basis between five teams will climax on June 21st in the deciding match between table leaders Tanzania and Kenya. Twiga Stars who are also using the Championship to prepare for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) lead the table with a better goal difference than Kenya who also have 9 points.

Kenya, Tanzania maintain unbeaten runs in CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship

Hosts Tanzania and Kenya have maintained their unbeaten runs in the on-going 2025 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship.

The Twiga Stars took to the field first and humbled Burundi 6-0 in a match played at the Azam Complex.

Mexican based professional Opa Clement Tukumbuke gave Tanzania the lead after 8 minutes placing the ball past Burundi’s goalkeeper Mediatrice Nsabimana.

The skipper Tukumbuke continued to lead by example when she netted a second goal after 31 minutes, Burundi should have pulled a goal back three minutes later but Esperance Habonimana failed to finish after the Tanzanian defending line had been caught flat footed.

After recess Tanzania continued to push forward and added more goals through Jamila Rajabu, Clara Luvanga, Diana Lucas and Stumai Abdallah.

Shima Bakari, the Twiga Stars head coach says he was impressed with his team’s performance. “The team played well and scored many goals. We need to work hard to make sure we win the remaining two matches,” added Bakari.

In the second match Harambee Starlets of Kenya defeated Uganda Crested Cranes 4-0.

The 2022 champions Uganda started on a high, but failed to find the goals. After 18 minutes Diana Wacera gave Kenya the lead, and skipper Dorcas Sikobe Nixon made it 2-0 ten minutes later.

The Crested Cranes defending line continued to collapse as Kenya attacked in numbers. Two minutes later Violet Nanjala wanyonyi scored Kenya’s third goal.

After recess the Ugandan team reorganized themselves and created some scoring opportunities through Sylvia Kabene, but the Harambee Starlets’ goalkeeper Lilian Onyango Awuor was up to the task. With nine minutes to full time Martha Emedot scored Kenya’s forth goal.

Tanzania and Kenya have collected six points each, although the hosts top the log because of a better goal difference.

Action returns on Thursday when Kenya face South Sudan, while Uganda take on Tanzania.
