NKURUNZIZA CUP 2022
KCCA FC stop Aigle Noir to lift Nkurunziza Cup 2022
Uganda Premier League side, KCCA FC stopped Aigle Noir FC 4-0 in the final of the Nkurunziza Cup played in Makamba, Burundi on Saturday.
The final also marked the official opening of the 24,000 capacity Nkurunziza Peace Park Stadium, home of Aigle Noir FC.
The Cup is played in memory of Burundi’s former President, the late Pierre Nkurunziza who passed away in 2020.
Julius Poloto put KCCA FC ahead after 16 minutes after the visiting team had run rings around Aigle Noir’s defending line. However, KCCA FC’s were forced to replace new signing Moses Waiswa due to injury.
Aigle Noir’s duo of Ngabo Mbede and Darcy Nshimirimana were cautioned before the break.
After recess, the hosts made three changes, but KCCA FC continued to push forward before a penalty was awarded after Rogers Mato was brought down in the box. Poloto made no mistake from the stop to make it 2-0.
Substitue Charles Lwanga and Ibrahim Juma also got their names on the score sheet for KCCA FC as the home side failed to match the intensity.
Morley Byekwaso, the KCCA FC coach said he was happy to see his young players performance well. “This is a good start as we prepare for the new season back in Uganda. We need to keep working hard so that we can win the 2022/2023 Uganda Premier League,” added Byekwaso.
The game was also attended by Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye who was the guest of honor.
Both KCCA FC and Aigle Noir will miss out in playing continental football in the 2022/2023 season after failing to win any silverware in Uganda and Burundi respectively.
