The Ngorongoro Heroes of Tanzania got a rude welcome to the U-20 Total African Cup of Nations (AFCON) losing 4-0 to Ghana in a Group C match played on Tuesday.

Percious Boah netted a brace for the Ghana team, while 16-year old Abdul Fatawu and Joselpho Barnes also got their names on the score sheet at the Stade de Nouadhibou.

The Tanzanian team started well and had scoring opportunities wasted by Hassan Kapalata in the 12th minute when he missed the target by inches, and another three minutes later Novatus Dismas also failed to find the target.

Ghana’s coach Abdul Karim Zito said he was happy with the good start of his team in the tournament. “It is good to start with a win in your first game so it will propel my players to do more,” he added.

Ngorongoro Heroes coach Jamhuri Mussa Kihwelo said they did not play well and have to improve in the other games. “We’re here for the first time but will learn lessons from every game,” he added.

Ghana lead Group C with three points and a good goal advantage, while Morocco who beat Gambia 1-0 are second in the group. Tanzania will next face Gambia on Friday in their second game.

Last season they also emerged champions of the Mauritania Premier League.

However, according to the regulations by the Rwanda Premier League Board, Al-Hilal SC will not be allowed to represent Rwanda in African competitions.

Handled by Romanian coach Laurențiu Reghecampf, Al-Hilal SC also reached the quarter final stage of the 2025/2026 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
