The Serengeti Girls will this afternoon face Japan in their opening Group D match at the on-going FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 in India.

Making a debut in the World Cup, coach Bakari Shime’s team will be all out to try and make a good start at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margoa.

“We have prepared well and the players are ready to go and give their best. We have had good preparations back in Tanzania and England ahead of this World Cup,” says the Serengeti Girls head coach Shime.

The coach explains that although his team does not have the experience of playing at this top level, they should not be taken for granted. “It was through hard work that we managed to qualify for the World Cup and therefore we should not be underrated,” he added.

While Tanzania will be making their first appearance in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Japan are making their seventh appearance and won the title in 2014.

On Tuesday the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 kicked off with four matches on card. US humbled hosts India 8-0, while Chile also picked a 3-1 victory against New Zealand. Other African representatives Nigeria and Morocco lost their opening matches.

Nigeria took a 1-0 lead, but eventually lost 2-1 to Germany, while Morocco fell 1-0 to Brazil.

The 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup which has attracted 16 teams is the 7th edition. The tournament should have taken place in 2020, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
