Ethiopia hope to stop Botswana in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers
Hosts Ethiopia will this afternoon be all out to seal their qualification for the next round of the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
The Ethiopian team will host Botswana in the second leg of the third round at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa. Coach Firew Hailegebral’s team registered a comfortable 3-1 win in the first leg.
“We have prepared well and the team is rearing to go all out and win at home to qualify for the next stage,” Hailegebral told Cecafaonline ahead of training in Addis Ababa on Thursday.
The coach made it clear that although they won the first leg, the team will double their efforts to make sure they seal qualification to the next round. Apart from one player who will have to pass a fitness test, all the other players are well prepared for the match,” added the Ethiopian coach.
The hosts will hope that Aryat Odong, Rediet Asresahgn and Mesay Temsgen who all scored in the first leg find their scoring touch again.
CECAFA’s other representatives Uganda will also face South Africa today in the return leg at the Dobsonsville Stadium in Johannesburg.
The Ugandan team won the first leg 1-0 in Kampala and will be looking for another win or a draw to qualify for the next round.
Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi, Uganda’s coach said he is confident they have prepared well and should be able to get a good result.
“I think these are the best players we have selected to go and do the job. I have the belief that the squad selected is competent to help us secure the result we want,” added Kiyingi.
On Saturday Burundi will host Tanzania in what promises to be a thriller in the other third round qualifying match. The Tanzanian team picked a 3-2 win in the first leg.
The eight teams that will qualify on aggregate will play in the fourth round of the qualifiers. Africa will be represented by two teams at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 in Costa Rica.

Burundi fail to qualify for FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2024
The national U-20 women’s team of Burundi have failed to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Captained by Olga Niyomwungere, the Burundi team suffered a 1-0 defeat away to the Falconents of Nigeria in the return leg of the last phase of the qualifier played on Saturday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
After a goalless first half where Burundi missed some good scoring chances, Esther Ajakaye netted the lone goal for the hosts after 79 minutes.
Nigeria qualified for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on a 2-0 goal aggregate.
Later on Sunday another team from the CECAFA Zone Ethiopia also failed to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Ethiopia defeated Morocco 1-0 at the at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa, but bowed out 2-1 on aggregate.
The other two slots will be known later today when Cameroon and Egypt, together with Ghana and Senegal face-off in their return legs.
Africa will be represented by four teams at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup 2024 that will take place in Colombia.

Burundi, Ethiopia qualify for final stage of FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers
Burundi and Ethiopia are the two teams from the CECAFA Zone to qualify for the last round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
After losing the first leg 3-2 away to DR Congo, the Burundi team won the second leg 1-0 in a match played at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, Uganda on Friday.
Annociatte Nshimirimana scored after 7 minutes and the goal was important to help Burundi qualify for the fourth stage on an away goals rule after the two teams tied 3-3.
Ethiopia also stormed the last round of the qualifiers in style after seeing off Mali 4-0 in the return leg played on Sunday. Emush Daniel netted a brace, while Meadin Sahilu and Messay Temesgen also scored to ensure Ethiopia qualified on a 6-0 goal aggregate.
The other teams from the CECAFA Zone Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania were eliminated. Uganda who lost the first leg 1-0 to Senegal, settled for a 1-1 draw on Saturday to bow out on a 1-2 goal aggregate.
Kenya suffered a 3-2 defeat to Cameroon to fall out on a 2-6 goal aggregate, while Tanzania suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Nigeria and bowed out 2-3 on aggregate.
The final round of the qualifiers for the CECAFA teams will now see Ethiopia face Morocco, while Burundi take on Nigeria.
Four teams will qualify to represent Africa at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia as representatives of the African continent.

Ethiopia stop Mali in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers
Ethiopia picked a vital 2-0 win away to Mali on Saturday in the first leg of the third round in the FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup qualifiers.
After a goalless first half, the hungry Ethiopian team came all out to score through Bethlehem Bekele and Emush Daniel to silence the home fans at the 26 Mars Stadium in Bamako.
While Ethiopia picked a win, all other CECAFA teams Uganda, Kenya and Burundi failed to register away wins.
In an earlier match played at the Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa, the hosts DR Congo stopped Burundi 3-2. Grace Lubiku, Feza Kalomba and Jenovic Makila scored for the home side, while Rukia Bizimana netted the two goals for Burundi with one coming off a penalty.
Kenya suffered a 3-0 defeat to Cameroon at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde. Annie Engamembem netted a brace, while Naomie Eto was also on the score sheet.
At the Lat-Dior in Thiès the home side Senegal stopped Uganda 1-0 with Sokhna Pene scoring the lone goal after 45 minutes.
On Sunday Tanzania settled for a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in a match played at the Azam Complex in Chamazi. Ubamba Chioma Olise gave the visitors the lead after 57 minutes, but Asnath Ubamba leveled matters after 13 minutes.
Eight teams will qualify for the final round of the qualifiers. Four teams could qualify from this tournament for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia as representatives of the African continent.

Five CECAFA Zone teams advance in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers
Five teams from the CECAFA Zone have advanced to the third round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Ethiopia have all made it through to the next round to be played next month.
The Tanzanian team who humbled Djibouti 5-0 in the first leg this time netted seven goals in the second leg played at the Azam Complex on October 11th.
Jamila Rajabu and Winifrida Gerald netted a brace each, while Diana Mnali, Zainabu Mohamed and Yasinta Mitoga also got their names on the score sheet to ensure Tanzania qualified on a 12-0 goal aggregate.
Burundi who played all the two matches in Pretoria ejected the hosts South Africa on an away goal’s rule after the first leg ended 1-1 and the second leg 2-2.
Chancelire Akimana gave Burundi the lead after 12 minutes at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. But the hosts leveled matters through Andrielle Mibe after 30 minutes. Annociate Nshimirimana restored Burundi’s lead in the 68th minutes, but Lindelwa Mabuza made it 2-2 four minutes later.
On Friday Uganda also defeated Mozambique 2-0 to qualify for the next stage on a 8-0 goal aggregate, while Kenya saw-off Angola 4-0 to sail through 10-1 on goal aggregate.
The Ethiopian team that battled to a 1-1 away draw to Equatorial Guinea in the first leg on Sunday managed to collect a 4-1 win against the same side in the return leg played at the Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa. Nigist Bekele scored a brace, while Mesay Temesegen and Emush Daniel also found the net for Ethiopia. Julia Etopa netted the lone goal for the visitors.
In the third round Ethiopia will now face Mali, Kenya will battle Cameroon, while Burundi take on DR Congo. Tanzania face an uphill task against Nigeria, and Uganda will face Senegal.
The best four teams after the fourth round will automatically qualify for FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2024 to take place in Columbia.
