Djibouti finish 3rd in Arab youth tourney, but have top scorer
DJIBOUTI’S National U-17 squad has snatched the 3rd place of the Arab youth football tourney which came to an end in Doha, on Sunday evening, after beating Qatar 3-2 in penalties, as the two nations fought for the 3rd place.
The Hotly-contested match ended in 3-3 equality in the 90-minute period it takes to play a football match, but the Djiboutian goalkeeper, Gamil Haider who survived two penalty shootouts lead his team to secure their 3rd place.
But Djiboutian striker, Moussa Hassan, was recognized as the top scorer of the two week-long tournament with 6 more goals.
“My intention was to win the trophy, but securing the 3rd place against Qatar whose players are highly paid and have everything we are lacking was even a good approach for me and my players and I am very hopeful we will reach our target in the coming years” the coach of Djibouti youngsters, Omar Mahfoud told CECAFA media after the match.
He praised the Qatari side for good exhibition, saying they were also a strong team.
“Having the top scorer of the tourney was another mentionable achievement for me and my young boys who are for the first time playing outside Djibouti” coach Omar Mahfoud said in his talk with CECAFA Media.
Djibouti FA president Souleiman Hassan Waberi who watched Sunday’s match, was the first to embrace and congratulate his youngsters on their good reach, saying he was happy with how professionally they performed.
This was the first time that a team from the small horn of African nation of Djibouti reaches such level at an Arab football competition.
However, Iraq won the trophy after they defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 on Sunday, while Djibouti finished 3rd and hosts Qatar ended up in the 4th place.

FIFA Forward program workshop ends in Djibouti
A FIFA forward program workshop for football leaders and finance managers
from CECCA Member Associations has come to an end in Djibouti.
The workshop gathered FA presidents, Secretary Generals and finance
managers from football associations in the CECAFA region and as well as
CECFA secretary General Nicholas Musonye was present.
The workshop was aimed at briefing Member Associations on the most
important principles in the FIFA Forward program and how to manage the
funds they receive from FIFA in the most appropriate way to avoid from
financial misconducts which can result in FIFA cutting their funds.
FIFA’s financial assistance to its member associations to accelerate
football development in the world will increase to 1,250,000 USD per year.
That is 5 million USD in every four years.
As shown in the financial assistance plan every FIFA-member association
gets access to 500,000 USD per year to cover running costs and other
financial needs and as well as 750,000 USD for football projects including
construction of soccer facilities and other complexes as planned by member
FAs and approved by FIFA.
This was the first such event organized by FIFA for CECAFA region and
hosted in Djibouti. President of Djiboutian Football Federation, Souleiman
Hassan Waberi said that it was an honor for his country and his federation
that FIFA forward program workshop for the region took place in his
country.
Djiboutian minister for youth and sport, Mr. Hassan Mohamed Kamil, who
addressed at the workshop thanked FIFA for its continued support to
football in his country.
“I would like to emphasize the testimony of our indefinite gratitude to
FIFA, not only because of organizing this workshop in our country, but
also for its constant support which helped develop football in the
country. I thank the member Associations in the CECAFA region for their
attendance of this workshop” said the minister in his address at the FIFA

Djibouti in the final of Arab women’s youth tourney
In an unprecedented move, Djibouti’s women’s national U 17 football squad is now in the final of Pan Arab women’s youth tourney which is under way in the Qatari capital of Doha.
The young girls kicked Palestine out of the competition after defeating them by 1-0 in the semifinal match on Saturday evening.
Both sides made a very competitive exhibition as they were all committed to making their way into the final and as a result the first half of the match ended in 0-0.
However, Djibouti’s side realized their golden goal when Fahima Mahmoud Ahmed (number 7) scored the winning goal for her nation in the 70th minute of the match, leaving Palestine in a shocking moment.
Djibouti will face Lebanon in the final match on Monday 23nd of February. Lebanon also confirmed their position in the final when they defeated Algeria by 1-0 on Saturday.
This is Djibouti’s first major approach in its football history and it comes after two years of marathon football development programs invented by President Souleiman Hassan Waberi who since resuming the leadership on 10th of November 2012 implemented more than a dozen development programs including the revival of women’s football in the country and as well as the creation of beach soccer in Djibouti.

Djibouti youngsters romp through to Arab youth tourney semis.
Djibouti’s U-17 football squad booked their place in the semi-finals of the Arab youth football tournament, which is currently under way in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The Youngsters shared points with Qatar, after their hotly-contested match ended in 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Earlier, the boys humiliated their Mauritanian rivals by 4-3 in the opening match of the tournament which was played on 20th of October,2014.
