Uganda have opened their CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup campaign with a goalless draw against guest side DR Congo in a Group A match played today at the Bahir Dar Stadium, Ethiopia.

However, Uganda’s head coach Morley Byekwaso said that although picking a draw against a strong DR Congo side was not easy, he blamed his striking line for not being effective.

“I need to thank my boys because playing a DR Congo side that is physically good and good in wing play. “We created so many chances but our strikers were not sharp enough to put away the chances,” added Byekwaso.

The coach made it clear that they still have time to go back and improve on the finishing. “We need to come and put up a better performance in the second Pool A match against Tanzania. We must fight to win against Tanzania,” added Byekwaso.

The DR Congo head coach Jean Claude Loboko also made it clear that although they faced a strong Ugandan side, his team should have won the game.

“We failed to take our chances, but getting a draw is a good start. We need to now focus on the next match,” said Loboko.
DR Congo will face Tanzania in their second Group A match on July 21st.
