CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship moved to Tanzania

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has moved the CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship from Kenya to Tanzania.

Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director confirmed on Monday that the tournament will now take place from July 25th to August 6th in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Kenya was meant to host the Championship from June 29th to July 11th in Nairobi, but the competition was pushed further ahead because of delay in funding.

However, after CECAFA members met in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire last week on the sidelines of the CAF Ordinary Assembly, it was decided that the Championship be hosted by Tanzania at the Chamazi Stadium.

The teams expected to participate include; Tanzania, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Zanzibar. Auka said Kenya will not take part in the Championship because of ongoing school games and later examinations around the same period.

After the CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship, the Zonal CAF Women’s Champions League qualifier will take place in Uganda from August 12-30th.

The other tournaments expected to take place in the 2023 season include the CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship, the CECAFA U-15 Boys Championship, the CECAFA Kagame Cup, and the CECAFA U-23 Championship.

The CECAFA Kagame Cup 2024 will now take place July 6-22nd in Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Three guest sides TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Nyasa Big Bullets (Malawi) and Zambia’s Red Arrows FC have all confirmed participation to join 13 other teams from the CECAFA Zone.

The competition was earlier planned to take place July 20th to August 4th in Tanzania. But because of the busy CAF calendar, the competition has been rescheduled so that it kicks-off earlier and ends few days before the start of the 2024/2025 CAF Club competitions.

“This competition will help our teams in the Zone prepare better in the pre-season ahead of the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup which start in August. Having top sides from DR Congo, Malawi and Zambia will also spice-up our Club competition and give our teams a real test,” says the CECAFA Executive Director John Auka Gecheo.

The CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2024 which was meant to open the CECAFA calendar from June 29th to July 14th has also been cancelled to give players more time to prepare with their teams ahead of the CECAFA Kagame Cup.

Teams for the CECAFA Kagame Cup: Vital ‘O (Burundi), APR FC (Rwanda), El Merreikh, Al Hilal, Hai El Wadi (Sudan), Young Africans SC, Simba SC, Azam FC, Coastal Union FC (Tanzania), Gor Mahia FC (Kenya), SC Villa (Uganda), JKU SC (Zanzibar), El Merreikh FC-Bentiu (South Sudan), Nyasa Big Bullets FC (Malawi), TP Mazembe (DR Congo) and Red Arrows FC (Zambia).
