CECAFA Kagame Cup 2021: Nyasa Big Bullets hold 10-man Young Africans SC

Guest side Nyasa Big Bullets FC have held a 10-man Young Africans SC side to a 1-1 draw as the CECAFA Kagame Cup 2021 kicked off in Tanzania today.

The home side took the lead after only 7 minutes at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. Junior Waziri put Nyasa Big Bullets’ Miracle Gabeya on pressure and the defender nodded the ball past his goalkeeper for an own goal.

But the Malawian Premier League side fought back strongly to earn a penalty after 29 minutes. Haji Abdalla charged on Aderpoje Babatunde in the box and the Burundian referee Georges Gatogato pointed to the spot. Chiukepo Msowoya made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-1.

After the interval Young Africans SC returned and dominated play in the Group A match, but failed to take their chances.
The Young Africans SC team was reduced by one player after goalkeeper Ramadhan Kabwili was sent off after 90 minutes. Kabwili came out to block Hassan Kajoke, but instead fouled him outside the box.

The Nyasa Big Bullets players continued to push forward in the added minutes to put the home side under pressure, but to no avail.

Razak Swa, the stand-in Young Africans SC coach said his team tried played well despite the draw. “We shall go back and plan for the second group match,” said Swa.

The Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Peter Mponda thanked his team for the good show. “We shall come back to fight for maximum points in the next game,” added Mponda.

On Monday three games will be played with Uganda’s Express FC facing Atlabara FC (South Sudan) in a Group A match at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, while Le Messager Ngozi (Burundi) take on KMKM SC (Zanzibar), and KCCA FC battle Azam FC (Tanzania) with the two games to be played at the Azam Complex, Chamazi.

Taifa Stars set for Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup 2025

Tanzania’s Taifa Stars will be the only guest side at the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup 2025 that kicked off in South Africa today.

The competition organized by the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) has attracted 14 national teams.

Tanzania replaced Morocco for the competition which will climax on June 15th in Mangaung, Bloemfontein.

Coach Hemed Suleiman’s team will kick start their Group C campaign on June 7th against Madagascar at the Toyota Stadium, then take on Eswatini in their second pool game on June 11th at the same venue. Taifa Stars will however start with an international friendly match against South Africa to be played on June 6th in Polokwane.

Tanzania who have only included a handful of professional players will use the tournament to prepare for the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship finals that they will co-host with Kenya and Uganda in August.

Taifa Stars have featured in the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup three times before, including in the inaugural year in 1997.

Group B: Angola, Namibia, Malawi, Lesotho

Group C: Tanzania, Madagascar, Eswatini

Group D: Zambia, Comoros, Botswana

Jamus SC crowned South Sudan Premier League champions

Jamus Sports Club are the champions of the inaugural 2024/2025 South Sudan Premier League

Making their first appearance in the South Sudan Premier League, Jamus SC finished unbeaten after stopping Al Hilal FC Wau 5-1 in their last match played on Saturday.

Christian Theodore gave Jamus SC the lead after 10 minutes at the Juba National Stadium. George Rodriguez added two more goals for Jamus SC before the interval.

Mario Taban made it 4-0 for Jamus SC two minutes into the second half, and Rodriguez completed his hat-trick. Fadul Osman pulled a goal back for Al Hilal FC Wau.

Jamus SC finished the season with 68 points from 26 matches played. The team won 21 matches and recorded five draws. Kator FC finished third with 62 points, while former champions El Merriekh SC Bentiu collected 58 points to finish in third place.

Jamus SC have been in very good form this season which saw them also win the Super Cup and Zain South Sudan Cup.

The team will now represent South Sudan in the 2025/2026 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the CECAFA Dar Port Kagame Cup.

CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship

Inaugural CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship 2025 postponed

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has rescheduled the inaugural CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship.

The inaugural Championship which was slated to take place June 6-11th will now take centre stage between July 7-12th in Mombasa, Kenya.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this postponement may cause to your preparations and plans. Our intention remains to deliver a high-quality competition, and this adjustment will allow us to meet all necessary requirements for a smooth and memorable event,” said CECAFA’s Executive Director, Auka Gecheo.

The teams that have already confirmed participation include; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zanzibar, Burundi and guest sides Malawi and Seychelles.

APR FC crowned 2024/2025 Rwanda Premier League champions

APR Football Club have retained the Rwanda Premier League title.

The army side were crowned champions on Wednesday after defeating Musanze FC 3-1 in their last match played at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. Bosco Rubonneka netted a hat-trick for APR FC.

APR FC who also lifted the Peace Cup finished the season with 67 points from 30 matches played, while their arch-rivals Rayon Sport came second with 63 points.

APR FC will now represent Rwanda in the 2025/2026 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the CECAFA Dar Port Kagame Cup.

Last year APR FC were runners-up in the CECAFA Dar Port Kagame Cup after losing to guest side Red Arrows FC from Zambia in the final.

Meanhwhile, the Somali Premier League was also decided last week with Mogadishu City Club FC emerging champions with 57 points, while Heegan FC finished second with 51 points.

The other Premier Leagues in the CECAFA region that have already been concluded include; Uganda, Burundi and Djibouti.
