The Serengeti Girls of Tanzania on Wednesday made a poor start in the on-going FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 in India.

Coach Bakari Shime’s team fell 4-0 to Japan in their opening Group D match played at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margoa.

Making their debut in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the Serengeti Girls were unlucky to be reduced to ten players after Neema Paul Kinega was sent off after only 20 minutes.

Later Jamapn who have featured seven times in the same World Cup scored through Uno Shiragaki to take a 1-0 first half lead. After recess the 2014 champions added three more goals coming from Mao Itamura, Ai Tsujisawa and Momoko Tanikawa.

The Serengeti Girls were restricted in attack after the earlier red card. But head coach Shime made it clear after the match that playing at the World Cup is a learning lesson because they are facing experienced teams. “We shall hope to come back stronger in our remaining two matches,” added the Serengeti Girls head coach.

Tanzania will next face France on October 15th, and take on Canada three days later. The two teams Canada and France settled for a 1-1 draw in another Group D match played on Wednesday.
