Tanzania are the only team from the CECAFA Zone that have qualified for the last round of the 2024 Paris Olympic Football qualifiers.

The Tanzanian team ejected Botswana 3-0 on aggregate on Tuesday, while Ethiopia and Uganda lost away matches to bow out of the competition.

After winning the first leg 2-0, the Tanzanian team maintained their good run to score through Belgian based professional Aisha Masaka after 25 minutes at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone on Tuesday.

Bakari Shime, the Tanzania head coach said he was happy with the display because his team followed instructions. ” We now need to prepare well for the next round, ” added Shime who also guided the Tanzania team to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup staged in India last year.

Tanzania will now face African reigning champions South Africa in the third round in February next round.

In the other matches played on Tuesday, Ethiopia suffered a 4-0 away defeat to Nigeria at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja to bow on a 5-1 goal aggregate.

Uganda Crested Cranes also fell 3-0 to hosts Cameroon in a match played at the Reunification Stadium in Douala. The Cameroon team went on to qualify on a 3-2 goal aggregate.

Besides Tanzania, Nigeria and Cameroon, the other teams that have qualified for the third round of the qualifiers include ; Ghana, Zambia, Tunisia, Morocco and South Africa.

The best two teams during the qualifiers will represent the African continent at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in France.

The Uganda Crested Cranes saw-off a star studded Cameroon team 2-0 in a match played at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru, while Tanzania’s Twiga Stars also registered a similar score at the Azam Complex on Thursday evening.

After a goalkeeping error Uganda took the lead through Catherine Nagadya in the 11th minute, while Fazila Ikwaput made it 2-0 for the hosts after 75 minutes from close range.

But earlier minutes to the break Uganda’s goalkeeper Vanessa Karungi saved Cameroon captain Nchout Njoya Ajara’s penalty kick.

Charles Ayeikoh Lukula, Uganda Crested Cranes’ interim coach thanked the players for the hard work after the win. ” We still have a lot of work to do ahead of the return leg to be played in Cameroon, ” added the coach.

In Tanzania, Twiga Stars netted in each half to silence the Botswana team. Turkish based striker Opa Clement scored after only two minutes from the spot, while Belgium based forward Aisha Masaka made it 2-0 after 88 minutes.

On Wednesday Ethiopia held giants Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in the first leg played in Addis Ababa.

Hosts Ethiopia have held Nigeria’s Super Falcons 1-1 in the first leg of the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifiers.

Birkie Amare gave the hosts an early lead after only 6 minutes at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.

The start studded Nigerian side tried to push forward led by Barcelona’s Asisat Lamina Oshoala, but the Ethiopians stood firm.

After recess the Super Falcons who reached the knockout round of the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup leveled matters after 51 minutes through skipper Rasheedat Ajibade. The two teams created more scoring opportunities, but failed to score more goals.

Firew Haile Gabriel, the head coach of Ethiopia’s team said that they still have a lot of work to do ahead of the return leg. ” We need to learn to take our chances that we create infront of goal and also defend well, ”  said the coach. The return leg will be played on October 31st in Abuja.

On Thursday two other teams from the CECAFA Zone will be in action with Tanzania hosting Botswana at the Azam Complex, while Uganda Crested Cranes face Cameroon at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.
