Uganda, Tanzania drawn in Group C for AFCON 2025

Two teams from the CECAFA Zone Uganda and Tanzania have been placed in Group C of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.

The draw for the AFCON 2025 was supervised by CAF Director of Competitions and Events, Samson Adamu was conducted on Monday night at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Morocco.

The AFCON 2025 will take place in six cities Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir, Marrakech, Fes and Tangier between December 21 to January 18th, 2026.

While Tanzania will be making their consecutive appearance after playing at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, Uganda will be making a return after their last appearance in 2019 in Egypt wher they reached the round of 16.

In the same Group with the two teams from the CECAFA Zone are three time champions Nigeria (1980, 1994, 2013) and 2004 champions Tunisia.

Former Nigeria International and skipper Joseph Yobo who was one of the legends who helped conduct the draw said Nigeria has a good team that reach far in the competition. “Nigeria have a good set of players. But looking at the Group it will not be easy,” said Yobo during an interview.

Sudan, CECAFA’s other representatives have been placed in Group E alongside two time champions Algeria, Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea.

The hosts Morocco who reached the semi final stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup have been placed in Group A alongside Mali, Zambia and Comoros. Record six time winners Egypt are on Group B together with South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.

Group A: Morocco, Mali, Zambia, Comoros

Group B: Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe

Group C: Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania

Group D: Senegal, DR Congo, Benin, Botswana

Group E: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan

Group F: Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, Mozambique

Power of Football brings Africa together, says CAF President Dr. Motsepe

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe has said Football is a big asset because it it’s power brings Africa together.

Dr. Motsepe said this on Monday night ahead of the official draw of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 draw conducted in Rabat, Morocco.

“We shall use the power of Football to show the rest of the World that African Football is growing. One example was during the World Cup in Qatar when an African team Morocco made history and reached the semi-finals,” added Dr. Motsepe.

Speaking at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat where the ceremony was taking place, the CAF President expressed his deepest gratitude to the Moroccan King Mohammed VI.

He said the biggest competition in Africa will be taking place in December in Morocco and it promises to be the best ever. “All of us are confident the AFCON in Morocco will be the most competitive and successful,” added Dr. Motsepe.

The CAF President also made it clear that that he was excited that 1.4 billion people watched the last AFCON in 2023. “This is an effort of all the 54 Member Associations and the different African governments,” he added.

 The TotatalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 which will bring together 24 teams will take place December 21, 2025 to January 18th, 2026.
