Uganda Cubs striker Oscar Mawa has vowed to keep knocking in the goals so that he can win the top scorers Award at the on-going Zonal Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) U-17 qualifiers.

The Uganda Cubs with a 100% winning run in the group stages of the competition will face Djibouti in the first semi-final on Sunday at the Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu, Rwanda.

But Mawa who has scored five of the goals out of Uganda’s total number of goals in the group stage has made it clear that he will just not stop scoring. “I feel I am in good form to score more goals and win the top scorers’ Award,” said Mawa.

The hard working striker netted a hat-trick in Uganda’s 5-0 humbling of Kenya in their opening match, before the sharp marksman scored a brace in the 3-0 victory against Ethiopia on Friday.

“Winning this Award will be a good motivator for me as I keep working hard to become a better striker. Besides the goals that I am scoring we are working as a team to be able to retain the trophy Uganda won in 2018,” added Mawa.

Tanzania’s Omar Abbas Mvungi who was also part of the U-20 team that finished second in the Afcon U-20 qualifiers last month is second on the scorers’ chart with two goals.

The players who have netted one goal each include; Moktar Djama Ali, Abdek Ahmed Mouhoumed – OG (Djibouti), Kassimu Yahaya (Tanzania), James Gachago, Umar Rajab (Kenya), Ivan Irinimbabazi, Travis Mutyaba, Ronald Madoi (Uganda), Eric Irihamye (Rwanda), Bereket Jiru, Miraj Nagash (Ethiopia)

The final and play-off for third place will be played on Tuesday at the same Umuganda Stadium. The best two teams will qualify for the Afcon U-17 to be played next year in Morocco.
