Young Africans defeat ASAS, Vipers SC fall in Botswana

Teams from the CECAFA Zone registered mixed results in the 2023/2024 TotalEnergies Champions league first preliminary round last weekend.

Tanzania’s Young Africans SC picked a 2-0 win against AS Ali Sabieh (ASAS) from Djibouti in a match played at the Azam Complex, Chamazi in Tanzania.

Stephane Aziz Ki and Zambian international Kennedy Musonda scored the goals for the Young Africans SC side that finished second in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup last season.

In the other matches played on Sunday Uganda’s Vipers SC lost 2-0 away to Jwaneng Galaxy FC in Gaborone. Sesinyi Thabang netted in each half to make sure the Botswana champions pick a home win.

Sudan’s Al Merreikh also picked a 1-1 draw away to Congo Brazzaville’s Otoho d’Oyo. Brayan Angulo gave the Sudan side the lead after only 3 minutes, but Kader Bidimbou leveled matters for the home side.

Al Hilal of Sudan also picked a walkover Wau Salaam FC (South Sudan). The return legs will be played between August 25-26th, 2023.

Last season four teams from the CECAFA Zone Simba SC, Vipers SC, Al Merreikh and Al Hilal made it to the group stage of the TotalEnergies Champions League, while the Tanzanian side went further and reached the quarter final stage.
