U-20 AFCON 2023
Uganda, South Sudan in same AFCON U-20 group
The two teams from the CECAFA Uganda and South Sudan have been placed in the same group for the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
Twelve teams placed in three groups will take part in the competition slated for February 19th to March 11th, 2023 in Egypt.
In the draw conducted on Friday evening in Cairo, Uganda together with South Sudan, Central African Republic and Congo Brazzaville have been placed in Group B..
While Uganda Hippos finished second in the 2021 AFCON U-20 held in Mauritania, South Sudan will be making their debut in the tournament after they finished second in the Zonal qualifiers held in Khartoum, Sudan.
Jackson Mayanja, the Uganda Hippos Coach told Cecafaonline after the draw that they will have to prepare well for the tournament. “We are placed in a tricky group because there is no team to be underrated. We played South Sudan in the qualifiers and they know us well,” reasoned Mayanja.
Group A will have the hosts Egypt, Mozambique, Senegal and seven times champions Nigeria, while Gambia, Tunisia, Benin and Zambia are placed in Group C. The top two teams of each group advance to the quarter finals along with the two best 3rd placed teams.
The top four teams will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in Indonesia later in 2023.
Ghana, the defending champions will miss out of the tournament having failed to qualify.
