Simba SC, Young Africans pick vital wins in CAF Champions League

Tanzanian sides Simba SC and Young Africans SC have registered important wins in their respective groups of the ongoing 2023/2024 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Simba SC humbled Moroccan side Wydad 2-0 in a Group B match played on Tuesday, while Young Africans SC was in good form stopping Medeama FC (Ghana) 3-0 on Wednesday.

After picking two draws and a defeat in their earlier three matches, striker Leandre Willy Essomba Onana netted a first half brace to ensure Simba Sc picked their first group win in a match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The win took Simba SC to second place with 5 points, behind ASEC Mimosas who humbled Jwaneng Galaxy 3-0 to move to 10 points. In another match played at the same venue on Tuesday Sudan’s Al Hilal settled for a 1-1 draw against ES Sahel (Tunisia).  

Pape Abdou N’Diaye netted in the first half for the Sudan Premier League side, but Salah Barhoumi found the equalizer in added time. Al Hilal who have collected 4 points remain bottom of Group C.

On Wednesday Young Africans SC, the reigning Tanzania Premier League champions humbled Ghana’s Medeama FC in a well attended encounter at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

In-form Pacome Zouzouma gave Young Africans SC the lead after 33 minutes, while skipper Bakari Mwamnyeto and midfielder Mudathiri Yahya added two second half goals. The win sends Young Africans SC to second place with 5 points, while Al Ahly who are yet to face CR Belouizdad lead with the same number of points, but better goal difference.

The next group matches involving the three CECAFA representatives will be played in February 2024.
