President Suluhu praises Young Africans SC for qualifying for Champions League quarter final stage
The President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan has congratulated Young Africans SC for qualifying for the quarter final stage of the on-going 2023/2024 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
Young Africans SC sealed qualification after humbling Algeria’s CR Belouizdad 4-0 in a Group D match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es salaam, Tanzania on Saturday.
The Algerians came in search of even a draw to make it hard for the Tanzania Premier League giants to qualify, but Young Africans SC showed they were better prepared and hungry to get the much needed result.
Mudathir Yahya gave Young Africans SC a 1-0 first half lead before Stephane Aziz Ki, Kennedy Musonda, and Joseph Gnadou added more goals after the interval.
The win propelled Young Africans SC to second place with 8 points, while table leaders Al Ahly who beat Ghana’s Medeama FC 1-0 have nine points. Even if CR Belouizdad who have 5 points beat Medeama in the last match and Young Africans SC suffer defeat to Al Ahly, the Tanzanian side still remain second with a better head to head over the Algerians.
After the big win, the Tanzanian President today has gone on to congratulate Young Africans SC. “I congratulate Yanga Club for doing well in the group stage of the Champions League of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and successfully qualifying for the Quarter Finals. This success has written a great history for the club and the sports industry in the country. You have brought happiness to millions of your fans and Tanzanians in general,” she said.
The other teams in the CECAFA Zone registered a vital draw away to Group B table leaders ASEC Mimosas and will now need a win against Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy to seal their place in the quarters. Sudan’s Al-Hilal also drew with Group C table leaders Petro de Luanda 0-0 in a match played in Libya.
