Do-or-die as Ethiopia face hosts Algeria

Ethiopia will be all out to prove a point when they face hosts Algeria in their second Group A match at the on-going TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022.
After picking a point in their opening goalless draw against Mozambique, the Walia will be in for a do-or-die encounter at the Mandela National Stadium in Bakari, Algiers.
But Ethiopia’s head coach Webetu Abate made it clear that although facing a host is always tricky, his players re ready for the challenge. “We know that the Algerian people love football – it is the number one sport here. However, this is not a situation that scares us. I have a group of professionals, all members of my team know what they have to do,” Abate said during a presser.
Ethiopia’s team captain Mesud Ahmad also made it clear that they will have no option but to attack. “We’ll have to attack, score and win,” added the captain.
Algeria who lead the group after their 1-0 win against Libya in the opening match will be all out to make it two wins infront of their passionate fans. The earlier Group A match will see Mozambique take on Libya.
CECAFA’s other representatives Uganda Cranes will return to action against Senegal on Wednesday at the 19th May 1956 Stadium in Annaba. Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s team kick started the campaign with a goalless draw against two time CHAN champions DR Congo on 14th January, 2023.
Sudan will also fancy their chances in Group C when they return against Ghana on Thursday. The Sudan team was meant to face defending champions on 15th, January, 2023, but the Morocco team did not show-up.
The CAF organizing Committee of the tournament has not decided that Group C will involve three teams, and the best two will qualify for the knockout stage. “The Organising Committee has referred the matter of Morocco no show against Sudan to the competent judicial body,” said a communication from CAF.
In the other matches played at the tournament Madagascar stopped Ghana 2-1 on Sunday, while Mali and Angola drew 3-3, and Cameroon beat Congo Brazzaville 1-0 in matches played on Monday.

New TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship 2024 dates finally announced

The TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 will finally take place August 2-30th, 20226.
CAF Executive Committee (EXCO) headed by President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe approved the new dates during a meeting held on January 27th in Rabat, Morocco.
The CHAN 2024 tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The event was originally meant to take place February 1-28th, but was postponed.
In the draw conducted on January 15th, 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya was placed in Group A with two-time winners Morocco and DR Congo, as well as Angola and Zambia.
Tanzania are in Group B alongside Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Central African Republic in their pool. Uganda in Group C will wait to know the other two opponents together with Niger and Guinea.
The other representatives from the CECAFA Zone Sudan will play in Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea who replaced Congo who were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player in their last match in the qualifiers.
Two teams must still book their places at the finals, with Algeria, Comoros, Gambia, Malawi, Egypt, South Africa and Gabon to take part in a qualification campaign to fill the slots in the draw for Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.
The CHAN tournament features only players who ply their trade in their domestic leagues and is a platform to showcase the quality of homegrown talent.

Group B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
Group C: Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2

CAF President praises Wallace Karia for Football development in Tanzania

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe has praised Wallace Karia for the good work he is doing in the development of Football in Tanzania.
Dr. Motsepe said this in Dar es Salaam on Thursday during the start of his two- day visit of the three nations that will host the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship 2024 (CHAN).
“I am proud of the good work Wallace Karia is doing in the development of Football in Tanzania,” Dr. Motsepe said this while touring the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. Karia is the President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).
The CAF President also thanked Tanzania’s President, Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan and Hussein Mwinyi, the President of Zanzibar for the continuously support of football development.
Dr. Motsepe was accompanied by the 4th CAF Vice President Seidou Mbombo Njoya, Chairperson of the CHAN Organising Committee, Tanzania Football Federation President Wallace Karia and CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba.
The CAF delegation are expected to arrive in Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday night ahead of their inspection on Friday and a meeting with Kenya President William Ruto and leadership of Kenya Football Federation. They will later travel to Kampala on Friday afternoon to meet with the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and the leadership of FUFA.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will hosts CHAN 2024 from 1 to 28 February 2025.

Eritrea to face Ethiopia in CHAN 2025 qualifiers

Eleven nations in the CECAFA Zone will battle in the qualifiers for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025.
In the draw conducted on Wednesday by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Eritrea have been drawn to face Ethiopia in the first round, while Burundi take on Somalia.
Eritrea had taken several years without participating in CHAN qualifiers. The winner between Burundi and Somalia will take on Uganda who automatically qualified for the second round because of being highly ranked.
The winner between Ethiopia and Eritrea will take on the winner between Sudan and Tanzania in the second round, while the winner between South Sudan and Kenya will battle the winner between Djibouti and Rwanda in the final phase of the qualifiers.
The tournament will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania between February 1-28th, 2025.
The first leg matches of the first round will be played between October 25-27, 20224 and the return legs between November 1-3, 2024. The second round matches of the qualifiers will be played between December 20-22 for the first round, and the return legs December 25-27, 2024.
CECAFA will have four teams play in the CHAN 2024, while all the other Zones COSAFA, WAFU A, WAFU B, UNAF and UNIFFAC will have three teams each.
In the CECAFA Zone Uganda has qualified a record six times from the seven Editions of the CHAN competitions that have been held since 2009. Rwanda have qualified four times, while Sudan and Ethiopia have each qualified for CHAN three times.

One extra slot for CECAFA Zone in TotalEnergies African Nations Championship 2025

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the CECAFA Zone will have four teams participating in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will host the competition slated for February 1-28th, 2025.
“The CECAFA Zone, which includes the three host countries, will receive an additional slot due to their automatic qualification as hosts. As a result, the total number of teams qualifying for the final tournament will be increased to 19 teams,” the African Football body announced on Thursday.
CAF also announced that the road to CHAN 2025 will start with the first round of qualifiers running October 25-27, 20224 and the return leg to be played November 1-3, 2024.
The second round of the qualifiers will be played between December 20-22 for the first round, and the return legs December 25-27.
Besides the CECAFA Zone that will have four teams, all the other Zones COSAFA, WAFU A, WAFU B, UNAF and UNIFFAC have been allocated three teams in the competition.
CHAN is a competition that consists of players playing in their respective national Leagues competitions.
Uganda has qualified six times from the seven Editions of the CHAN competitions that have been held since 2009. Rwanda have qualified four times, while Sudan and Ethiopia have each qualified for CHAN three times.
