Ethiopia’s U-20 Women’s coach Haile Gabriel signs new contract

The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has renewed the contract of the U-20 women’s national team coach, Firew Haile Gabriel.

“We are happy with Haile’s work and decided to renew his contract for  another two years,” said Bahiru Tilahun, the EFF Secretary General on Thursday in Addis Ababa.

Haile Gabriel who took over the U-20 women’s team in 2019 is also credited for identifying women’s talent from the grassroots.

He guided Ethiopia to win the regional CECAFA Women’s U-20 Championship 2022 in Uganda last year.

The Ethiopian team is also in the final phase of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers where they will face Ghana over two legs.

New Generation win 2023 Zanzibar Women’s Premier League title

New Generation Women’s Football Club are the 2023 Zanzibar Women’s Premier League champions.

The New Generation team beat U.M.Z 3-1 in their last match played on Tuesday at the Amaan Stadium.

Edna Amos gave U.M.Z the lead after 9 minutes, but second half goals by Juma Kalunde, Joseph Merry and Rukia Hassan were enough to ensure New Generation picked three vital points.

The win sent New Generation to 30 points after 12 matches played, two ahead of the former champions Warriors Queens Women’s Football Club. P.D.S finished third on the log with 25 points, while U.M.Z picked 20 points

Warda Abdulhakim, who was awarded special prize as best player by the Zanzibar Football Federation (ZFF) thanked her teammates for the hard work throughout the season. “It was not easy to win the title, but we worked really hard,” she added.

The 2023 Zanzibar Women’s Premier League had 7 teams with Yellow Queens FC finishing bottom with only 1 point.

New Generations who also lifted the title in 2021 will now return to represent Zanzibar in the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifier for the CECAFA Zone later this year. Tanzania’s Simba Queens are the CECAFA Zone reigning champions.

Yei Joint Stars retain South Sudan League title

Yei Joint Stars Women’s Football Club have lifted the 2022 South Sudan Women’s National Premier League.

The Yei based team stopped Munuki WFC 1-0 on Monday in the final played at the Buluk technical Center. Murine Makunga netted the lone goal after 26 minutes.

Head coach Esther Khamis says she is happy that they have retained the trophy and will have the opportunity to represent the country again in the Zonal qualifiers for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League.

“It has been really hard work through out the season and we are glad the players have been positive to be able to retain the trophy,” added the head coach.

The South Sudan National Women’s Premier League organized by the South Sudan Football Association (SFFA) attracted eight teams. The teams were pooled in Groups with four based in Wau and the other in Juba. The best two from each group qualified for the semi finals.

Tanzania’s Aisha Masaka signs for Sweden’s BK Häcken

Tanzania’s U-17 star women’s player Aisha Masaka has signed a 3-year contract with top Swedish Premier League side, BK Häcken

The 18-year old Masaka was unveiled by the Club today at their Bravida Arena.

“She is good at using her speed and power in the offensive and she is an experienced goal scorer. We are convinced that Aisha will add another dimension to our squad, and we warmly welcome her to Hisingen,” says the BK Häcken sports director Martin Ericsson.

Masaka who has been featuring for Young Africans Women’s team says she is happy to join a new team in Europe. “I’m very happy to be here. I hope to be able to score many goals and help the team get as high as possible,” says Masaka.

She was the top scorer in the 2020/2021 season in the Tanzanian Women’s League with 35 goals in 20 matches. Masaka has also scored 27 goals in 14 matches for Tanzania’s U17 national team and two for the senior team from four matches.
