Africa has exceptional football talent – Dr. Patrice Motsepe

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe has football talent in the African continent is abundant and needs to keep improving.

Dr. Motsepe said this yesterday before the draw for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 preliminary round was made at the Krystal Palace Hotel in Douala, Cameroon.

“ This continent has exceptional football talent. We need to keep working hard to improve the talent,” added the CAF President.

He also called on the media to identify some of the shortcomings at the on-going AFCON 2021, so that in-turn CAF will know and always work hard towards improving. “We are learning from the AFCON 2021 so that the next ones get better and better,” added Dr. Motsepe.

The CAF President also thanked major sponsors including TotalEnergies, Orange, Visa and Tik Tok among others.

CECAFA President Maduot attends historic Peace match in Somalia

The President of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) attended a historic peace match at the  Mogadishu Stadium on Tuesday.

In a sign of solidarity and support, President Augustino Parek Maduot watched the match featuring some African Legends and a selected team. Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre also garced the ceremony.

The African football legends who featured in the match watched by a big crowd included Samuel Eto’o (now Cameroon Football President and CAF Executive Member), Jay-Jay Okocha, and Emmanuel Adebayor. President of the Djibouti Football Federation and FIFA Council Member Suleiman Waberi also featured in the match.

“I am happy to be in Somalia because we must always support our members in the Zone. It is always good to be united as a Football family,” said the CECAFA President Maduot.

Somalia’s Prime Minister said the event marks a significant milestone in their efforts to restore the image and strength of Somali sports. “The presence of international stars and sports leaders shows that global confidence in Somalia is returning,” added Barre.

The match also served as an opportunity to assess Somalia’s readiness to host international fixtures in standard stadiums, amid renewed efforts to upgrade sports infrastructure across the country.

FIFA Council Member Waberi meets Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud

The FIFA Council and CAF Executive Member, Souleiman Hassan Waberi has held talks with the President of the Republic of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud.

Waberi who arrived in Mogadishu on Monday for a 3-Day visit met the President on Tuesday together with the President of the Somali Football Federation (SFF), Ali Abdi Mohamed at the State House in Mogadishu, Villa.

He also held talks with members of the Somali Football body, Football Club Presidents, the Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and the Mayor of Mogadishu, the Minister for Youth and Sport, and the National Olympic Committee of Somalia.

“We are very happy that Waberi took time off his busy schedule to come and visit Somalia,” said SFF President Ali Abdi Mohamed.

Waberi said he delivered messages of greeting and well wishes from the FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe to the President of Somalia and the Prime Minister to the football entity and to the entire people of Somalia” FIFA Council Member,

Waberi is also the President of the Djibouti Football body. He was elected a FIFA Council member during the CAF General Assembly held on March 12th, 2025 in Cairo, Egypt.

Tanzania’s Malaika Meena glad to sign for Bristol City

Tanzanian international Malaika Meena has said she is very excited signing for Barclays Women’s Championship side, Bristol City Women FC.

The midfielder signed few days ago for Bristol City on a two-and-a-half-year deal with the option of a further year.

“I’m very excited to sign for Bristol City, especially with the ambition of this club, fighting for promotion,” she said.

Meena came through the academy systems at both Arsenal and then Chelsea before signing for Wake Forest University in North Carolina. The midfielder spent three and a half years in the USA before returning to England to sign for the Robins.

The 21-year old joins after successful season with Wake Forest University.

Meena has also been summoned ahead of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 qualifiers where Tanzania face Equatorial Guinea in the first round.

Tanzania’s Luvanga scores hat-trick in Al-Nassr win

Tanzanian International Clara Cleitus Luvanga netted a hat-trick in Al-Nassr FC’s 7-0 win against Eastern Flames FC in a Saudi Arabia Women’s Premier League match played on Friday night.

Al-Nassr’s French import Nesrine Bahlouli gave her team the lead after only three minutes at their Al-Nassr Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Duda Francelino from Brazil later converted a penalty after 14 minutes to increase Al-Nassr’s lead.

A goal hungry Luvanga later netted three goals before the interval. Kathellen Sousa and Rinas Saleh Hetrsh Al Yami added two second half goals to ensure Al-Nassr registered a big win to maintain their lead on the log.

Luvanga’s team leads the table with 39 points from 13 matches played a 55 goals scored. Al-Ahli are second on the 10-team log with 31 points.

Luvanga joined the Saudi Arabian Women’s Premier League side in October 2023 and went on to win the League title.
