Young Africans stop South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs in friendly match

Tanzania Premier League champions Young Africans SC defeated visiting Kaizer Chiefs FC 1-0 in an international friendly match played on Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The two teams came out all blazing in the match Young Africans were using to celebrate Mwananchi Day, and the home side took the lead through Kennedy Musonda after two minutes of added time going into half time.

The Zambian striker capitalised on a neat pass from to cleverly chip the ball past advancing Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Issac Khune.

In the second half Young Africans SC were more dominant as they created several scoring opportunities, but failed to put them away.

Samkelo Zwane also came close to finding the next for the South Africa Premier League side after 78 minutes, but missed the target, while Mduduzi Shabalala has his shot saved two minutes later.

Musonda said he was happy to score the only goal in their first international friendly ahead of the new season. “I think the more you train, the more you play good football. We are still knowing each other well and the best way to do that is by playing matches,” he added.

Miguel Gamondi, Young Africans SC’s new coach said he was happy with the way his players expressed themselves. ” We controlled the game and created chances. We need to keep working hard through out the season, ” added Gamondi.

The Kaiser Chiefs coach Molefi Ntseki said despite the defeat, he was happy with the way his team played. ” This is still pre-season and the team is picking up well. We thank Young Africans SC for the invitation, ” added the coach.

In another international friendly match involving a Tanzania Premier League side played on Saturday Azam FC stopped US Monastir 2-1 in a match played in Sousse, Tunisia. Azam FC will represent Tanzania in the 2023/2024 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
