South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars assistant coach Sony Harriet has said they are very happy to have picked their first point in the on-going CAF Women’s Champions League – CECAFA qualifiers 2024.

Yei Joint Stars WFC who are making their fourth appearance in the qualifiers held Kenya Police Bullets WFC to a goalless draw in a Group A match played at the Abebe Bikila Stadium on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“We know that the Kenyan team is strong and we are happy we managed to get a point. Our next target is to try and beat the home side Commercial Bank of Ethiopia because we are determined to qualify for the knock out stage for the first time,” added Sony Harriet.

In their previous three appearances Yei Joint Stars have registered one win in the group stage. In 2021 they beat New Generations FC (Zanzibar) 2-1, stopped GRFC from Djibouti 6-0 in 2022, and defeated yet FAD Djibouti 2-0 last year.

The tournament started on Saturday with Commercial Bank of Ethiopia struggling to stop Rayon Sports WFC 3-2 in a match played at the Addis Ababa Stadium. Aregah Kalsa Tadesse netted a brace, while Sinaf Wakuma Zenaf Demise was also on the score shet for the home side. Two second half goals by Jeanette Ukwikunda and Jeannine Mukandayisenga were not enough to see the Rwanda champions salvage a point.

Action continues on Monday with Burundi’s PVP Buyenzi WFC taking on Kawempe Muslim Ladies (Uganda), while 2022 champions Simba Queens (Tanzania) battle FAD Djibouti in Group B matches at the Abebe Bikila Stadium.
