Waberi happy to see AFCON returning to CECAFA Zone

The 3rd Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Souleiman Hassan Waberi has said he is happy that finally the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be hosted in the CECAFA Zone.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President announced on Wednesday after an executive committee meeting held in Cairo, Egypt that the Pamoja bid that involves Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania had won the bid to host the AFCON 2027.

The biggest football showpiece in the African continent will be returning to East Africa after it was last hosted in the Zone in 1976 in Ethiopia

” The granting of CAN 2027 to the three countries of the CECAFA Zone Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania gives me a feeling of pure happiness and obvious pride in my capacity as Vice President of CAF representative of this geographical sector, ” said Waberi.

Waberi, who is also President of the Djibouti Football Federation made it clear that this victory is all the more historic for the CECAFA Zone which has not had the honor of organising the continental tournament for 47 years since the last CAN in our sector dates back to 1076 in Ethiopia.

” My congratulations to the three countries for having presented an application file that is remarkable in every way, and my sincere thanks to the members of the executive committee for their choice which will boot the development of football in our area, ” added Waberi.

The other nations in the CECAFA Zone that have hosted the AFCOn before include ; Sudan (1959, 1970) and Ethiopia in 1962 and 1968.
