Two teams from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Zone Vipers SC (Uganda) and Sudan’s Al Merreikh have qualified for the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAf Champions League.

Vipers SC defied all odds to eject former African champions TP Mazembe in their own backyard in Lubumbashi, while Al Merreikh ejected Al Ahly Tripoli.

After a goalless draw just like was the case in the first leg in Uganda, Vipers SC showed more composure to win 4-2 on penalties.

Roberto Oliveira, the Vipers SC coach thanked his players for the hard work. “We are happy to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League. This has been achieved because of the hard work by the team and management,” added the Oliveira.

In Libya it was a different story as Sudan’s Al Merreikh lost 3-1, but qualified on an away goal advantage. Mohamed Mustafa, Al Merreikh’s goalkeeper was in good form when he stopped a late penalty.

On Sunday afternoon three other teams from the CECAFA region will be in action to determine if they make it to the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Tanzania Premier League side, Simba SC who stopped Primeiro de Agosto 3-1 in the first leg will host the Angola team at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. In Khartoum, the Sudan Premier League champions Al Hilal will host Young Africans SC. The first leg ended goalless.
