Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and skipper Denis Onyango has made it clear they are targeting the knock out stage at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 2019 AFCON kicks off today with hosts Egypt facing Zimbabwe in a Group A match at the Cairo International Stadium. The tournament which for the first time brings 24 teams together will climax on July 19th.

Onyango said after failing to get to the knock out stage in 2017 in Gabon, they must now improve and move to the net step. “We shall need to work as a complete team. To get as far as we can, we need to get the best use of the team quality. We have camped for a long time in Abu Dhabi and virtually all the players know each other well. Football is a team sport. You can not win a game when you are playing individual football,” added the South African based goalkeeper.

Head coach Sebastien Desabre said his team is ready to play their hearts out. “We have good organisation, cohesion and quality in the team basing on values of working together,” added the French man at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cairo.

The CECAFA record winners Uganda Cranes will open against DR Congo on June 22rd, before they battle Zimbabwe on June 26th. Desabre’s team will face Egypt in their last Group game on June 30th.
