The Uganda Cranes, Taifa Stars of Tanzania and Rwanda have qualified for the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). Uganda made sure they qualified for their fifth straight CHAN competition after a 3-0 win over Burundi in the return leg played at the StarTimes Stadium in Kampala on Saturday.

Fahad Bayo, Vianne Sekajugo and Allan Okello netted the goals to ensure Uganda Cranes qualify on a 6-0 goal aggregate. “We are happy as a team that we have played well to qualify for 2020 CHAN tournament,” said Uganda Cranes skipper Halid Lwaliwa.

The 2016 CHAN quarter finalists Rwanda also qualified on a 2-1 goal aggregate against Ethiopia. After picking a 1-0 away win over two weeks ago, the return leg ended 1-1 in Kigali on Saturday.

Lemene Mesfin Tafesse gave the visitors the lead after 70 minutes before Ernest Sugira leveled matters 12 minutes later.

On Friday Tanzania booked the first slot from the Cecafa region by qualifying on an away goals rule after they managed a 2-1 win away to Sudan in Khartoum. Sudan had stopped Taifa Stars 1-0 in Dar es Salaam, but second half goals by Erasto Edward Nyoni and Ditram Nchimbi propelled Tanzania to the 2020 CHAN in Cameroon. Amir Kamal had netted the opening goal for Suidan after 30 minutes.

The Cecafa teams Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania now join hosts Cameroon, Zambia, Namibia, Togo and Morocco as teams that have so far qualified for the tournament.

The CHAN tournament is played between the best national teams of Africa, exclusively featuring players who are active in the local national Leagues on the ongoing season.
