Uganda Hippos, South Sudan qualify for AFCON U-20 quarter final stage

The CECAFA representatives Uganda and South Sudan have qualified for the quarter final stage at the on-going U-20 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 in Egypt.

The two teams played to a goalless Group B match played on Sunday night at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia. The second Group B match played between Congo Brazzaville and The Central African Republic also ended goalless.

The Uganda Hippos team crated chances in the first half through Umar Lutalo and Travis Mutyaba, but failed to beat the South Sudan goalkeeper Godwill Yogusuk.

The Young Bright Stars also came close to scoring through Paul Mara Felix Abishai. Peter James, the South Sudan coach said he is happy qualifying for the quarter final in their first time in the tournament. “I am happy with the team and we need to keep working hard ahead of the quarter final stage,” added the happy coach.

Uganda Hippos and Congo Brazzaville qualify with 5 points each, while South Sudan qualifies as one of the best third placed teams in the tournament.

The three teams from Group B now join in-from Senegal, Nigeria and The Gambia in the last knock out stage  of eight. Uganda Hippos will now face Nigeria, while South Sudan battle The Gambia at the quarter final stage.
