Tanzania’s Simba SC win, Al Hilal draw away in Nigeria

Tanzania Premier League giants Simba Sports Club have kicked started their 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League campaign on a winning note.

Simba registered a 2-0 win away to Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy FC in the 2nd preliminary round stage first leg match played at the Botswana National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Ugandan International Tadeo Lwanga tapped in the first goal off a corner after only three minutes, before skipper John Bocco made it 2-0 after 6 minutes.

Simba who reached the quarter final stage of the lucrative tournament in the 2020/2021 season continued to attack t look for more goals, but also defended well to keep the home side at bay.

The other team from the CECAFA region Al Hilal Omdurman from Sudan picked a 1-1 draw away to Nigeria’s Rivers United FC.

Mohamed Mozamil Mohamed gave the Sudan team the lead after 37 minutes at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in River State. But an own goal by Saeed Ahmed after 68 minutes was enough to enable the home side pick a draw.

In the other matches played on Sunday Maniema (DR Congo) drew 2-2 with Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), while Ghana’s Hearts of Oak stopped Wydad (Morocco) 1-0.

Second leg matches will take place October 22-24 with the aggregate winners qualifying to the group stage, while the losers play in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup additional second preliminary round.
