Simba SC, Al Hilal advance
Tanzania Premier League side Simba SC and Al Hilal (Sudan) have advanced to the group stage of the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
Simba SC edged visiting CD Primeiro de Agosto (Angola) 1-0 in the return leg of the second round preliminary leg played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
Zambian international Moses Phiri netted the lone goal after 32 minutes to ensure Simba SC qualified on a 4-1 goal aggregate.
Juma Mgunda, Simba SC’s caretaker coach says he is proud of his players who have accomplished the mission of making it to the group stage. “I am happy we have done well and won the four matches to reach the group stage,” said Mgunda who took over from Zoran Manoljovic who parted ways with the club.
In Khartoum, Tanzania Premier League reigning champions Young Africans SC found the going tough after losing 1-0 to hosts Al Hilal. Mohamed Abderrhman netted the lone goal after only 3 minutes to ensure the Sudan giants qualified on a 2-1 goal aggregate.
The CECAFA region will have four teams Al Merreikh, Al Hilal (Sudan), Simba SC (Tanzania) and Uganda’s Vipers SC play join the other 12 from other Zones in the lucrative group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
