Simba SC out, Al Hilal in group stage

Tanzania’s Premier League champions Simba SC have been eliminated from the 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Simba SC lost 3-1 to Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy FC in the second leg of the 2nd preliminary round stage played on Sunday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

After losing the first leg 2-0 at home, the Botswana side came all out detrmined to get a good result. Jwaneng Galaxy SC’s Weddell Rudath netted a brace, while Gape Mohutsiwa Rall also scored, and Simba SC got their goal through Rally Bwalya.

The Botswana side qualified for the group side on an away goals rule after the teams ties 3-3. Simba SC who reached the quarter final stage in the same competition last season will now drop to the play-off of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

While Simba SC failed to make it to the group stage, Sudan’s Al Hilal became the second team from the CECAFA region to advance to the group stage.

Al Hilal registerd a 1-0 win against Rivers United (Nigeria) in a 2nd leg tie played at the Suez Stadium in Egypt. Yasir Mozamil Mohamed netted the lone goal after 3 minutes. Al Hilal qualified for the group stage on a 2-1 goal aggregate.

Another team from Sudan Al Merreikh qualified for the group stage yesterday after eliminating Zanaco FC (Zambia).

The other teams that have so far qualified for the group stage include; ES Setif, CR Belouizdad (Algeria), Al Ahly, Zamalek (Egypt), Esperance, Etoile Du Sahel (Tunisia), Raja Casablanca (Morocco), Mamelodi Sundowns, AmaZulu FC (South Africa), Petro Atletico, Sagrada Esperanca (Angola) and Horoya (Guinea).
