Seven teams for U-20 AFCON qualifiers in Sudan

Seven teams have confirmed participation in the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers for the CECAFA Zone.

The qualifiers are slated to take place from October 22 to November 3rd, 2022 at the Al Hilal Stadium and El Obeid Stadium in Sudan.

Auka Gecheo, the executive Director of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed that although 10 Member Associations had earlier confirmed, some have communicated that they will not be able to send teams.

“Rwanda and Somalia have told us they will not participate, while Eritrea have not communicated and Kenya are still serving a suspension by FIFA,” says Gecheo.

He made it clear that the draw for the qualifiers will be conducted on October 11th. The hosts Sudan will be the top seeds in Group A, while the defending champions Uganda will be the top seeds for Group B. One of the groups will have four teams and the second group three teams, with the best two teams in each group making it to the semi final stage.

Egypt will host the 2023 AFCON U-20 event which will be the 17th edition.

Teams that will be drawn: Sudan, Uganda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Burundi, Ethiopia and Djibouti
