Tanzania’s Serengeti Girls have recorded their first victory at the on-going FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

After losing their opening Group D match 4-0 to Canada, the Serengeti Girls put their act together to edge France 2-1 in a match played at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao on Saturday.

Diana William Mnaly put Tanzania ahead after 17 minutes, and Christer John Bahera netted the second after 56 minutes from the spot. France  pulled one back after 77 minutes through Lucie Calba from the spot.

Although France dominated play, the Tanzanian team defended well. The Serengeti Girls also missed a penalty in the second half.

The Tanzanian team were later reduced by a player when Joyce Fred Lema was sent-off.

“ This is a very good win because it makes us have the chance to qualify for the knock out stage,” said a happy coach of the Serengeti Girls Bakari Shime.

While Canada lead Group D with six points, Tanzania are now second on 3 points, while France are third (1 point) and Canada bottom of the log with also one point. Tanzania will face Canada in their last Group D match on October 18th, while Japan who have already qualified for the knock out stage face France .
