Perfect start for CBE, Kampala Queens on Day 1
Ethiopia Commercial Bank and Kampala Queens FC registered wins as the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers – CECAFA Zone kicked off on Saturday.
Skippered by Loza Abera, the Ethiopian giants battle from a goal down to beat Buja Queens 2-1 in the first Group A match played at the FUFA technical Centre in Njeru.
A defensive mix-up gave Topister Situma room to give Buja Queens the lead after 14 minutes. Later Ethiopia Commercial Bank returned with more purpose and hunger and netted two second half goals through Argash Tadesse and Abera.
Birhan Gizaw Heye, the Ethiopia Commercial Bank coach said that although they did not play well in the first half, his players had stepped up after recess. « We need to improve as the tournament progresses, » added Heye.
In the second Group A match Striker Fazila Ikwaput netted a hattrick to help Kampala Queens register a 3-0 win against South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars FC.
Ikwaput who joined Kampala Queens from Omonoia Women Fc in Cyprus scored two goals in the first half, and added the third later after the interval.
« I am happy to score three goals in the opening match and I will continue working hard together with my teammates, » said a happy Ikwaput after the match.
Action in Group A will return on August 15th when Kampala Queens face Buja Queens, while Ethiopia Commercial Bank take on Djibouti’s FAD FC. The best two teams in this group will qualify for the semi final stage to battle the two teams from Group B.
