Kipanga, AS Kigali progress to next round

CECAFA representatives Kipanga FC, AS Kigali, Hilal Alsahil SC and Fasil Ketema FC have qualified for the second round of the Preliminary round of the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

On Friday Burundi’s Bumamuru FC stopped Fasil Kenema FC 1-0 with Shassiri Nahimana netting the goal. But the Ethiopian team qualified for the second round on a 3-1 goal aggregate.

In Zanzibar it was all celebrations after Kipanga FC made it to the next round of the CAF competition for the first time. After drawing 2-2 on aggregate against South Sudan’s Al Hilal Wau on Saturday, the Zanzibar team won 4-3 on penalties infront of their fans at the Amani Stadium on Saturday.

Tanzania’s Geita FC won 2-1 in the second leg played at home, but the Sudan team Hilal Alsahil SC qualified on an away goals rule since they won the first leg 1-0.

Rwanda’s AS Kigali also sailed through to the next round after a hard fought 1-0 win against ASAS Djibouti Telecom on Sunday. Rashid Kalisa netted the second half goal.

In the other matches involving teams from the CECAFA region 10-man Bidco FC from Uganda suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Future FC in Cairo to bow out 1-0 on aggregate, while Sudan’s Al Ahli Khartoum settled for a goalles draw against Al Akhdar FC, but the Libyan team qualified for the next stage 3-0 on aggregate.

In the second round of the preliminary round to be played next month Fasil Ketema will face CS Sfaxien (Tunisia), while AS Kigali battle Al- Nasr, and Kipanga FC take on Club Africain (Tunisia). Hilal Alsahil will battle Egypt’s Pyramids, and Azam FC (Tanzania) who got a bye to the second round will take on Al Akhdar.
