Kenya’s Vihiga Queens kick start CAF Women’s Champions League campaign

It’s action time for Vihiga Queens FC this afternoon as they face Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in the opening Group B match at the on-going TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League 2021.

The Group B match will take place at the Al Salaam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.

The Kenyan side qualified for the inaugural competition after emerging champions in the Zonal qualifiers where they beat Commercial Bank of Ethiopia 2-1 in the final.

Vihiga Queens coach Charles Okere has said they are well prepared for the opening match. “We have prepared well and ready to try and start well in the competition,” said Okere in Cairo yesterday.

Auka Gacheo, the CECAFA Executive Director has wished Vihiga Queens success in the tournament which started yesterday and ends on November 19th. “We will definitely be behind the Vihiga Queens team as they take on the best in Africa and we believe they will do the region proud,” added Gecheo.

Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo, the Governor of Vihiga County, the main sponsors of the team also wished Vihiga Queens FC. “ I take this opportunity to wish our Queens the very best as they seek continental glory. All the success to you, Legacy Makers,” said Dr. Ottichilo.

The inaugural tournament kicked-off on Friday with Wadi Degla (Egypt) stopping AS Mande (Mali) 3-1, while Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies FC also picked a 3-1 victory against Malabo Kings (Equatorial Guinea).

Group B: Vihiga Queens FC (Kenya), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), Asfar Club (Morocco), Rivers United (Nigeria)
