Kenya progress to next round of WAFCON 2022 qualifiers
Kenya Harambee Starlets have progressed to the second round of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.
The Kenyan side defeated South Sudan 7-1 in a return leg match played yesterday at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. Kenya went on to qualify on a 15-1 goal aggregate.
Skipper Mwanahalina Dogo netted a first half brace for the Harambee Starlets before substitute Jentrix Shikangwa also netted a brace, while Janet Bundi, Lydia Akoth and Neddy Atieno also got their names on the score sheet.
Coach Charles Okere, the Harambee Starlets head coach said he was happy with the performance of the team over the two legs. “We now have to keep working hard ahead of the next matches.
Kenya will face the winner between Uganda and Ethiopia. The Crested Cranes of Uganda picked a 2-0 win in the first leg, and the second leg will be played on October 26th in Addis Ababa.
In another match played at the Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg, Namibia defeated Tanzania 3-2 in the return leg. The Twiga Stars of Tanzania were dumped out on a 5-3 goal aggregate.
Omari Mwanahamis gave Tanzania the lead, but Spanish based striker Zenatha Coleman leveled matters. Coleman scored two other goals for Namibia, while Clement Oppah pulled one back for for the Twiga Stars.
On October 26th Burundi will host Eritrea, while Ethiopia face Uganda, and Sudan play Algeria in the other second legs matches involving teams from the CECAFA region.
