The Harambee Stars of Kenya have held hosts Tanzania to a goalless draw in the first leg of the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier.

Skippered by John Bocco, the hosts failed to score in-front of their fans at the National Stadium in Dar el Salaam on Sunday.

The two sides will face-off in Nairobi on August 3rd to decide which team makes it to the final round of the qualifiers. In the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, the Harambee Stars beat Tanzania’s Taifa Stars 3-2 in a Group C match.

In the other 2020 CHAN qualifying games played in the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) region over the weekend Ethiopia picked a vital 1-0 away to Djibouti.

Olivier Dusabe and Jospin Nshimirimana scored to help hosts Burundi beat South Sudan 2-0 in Bujumbura, while Uganda Cranes humbled Somalia 3-1 in a game played at the Al Haji Hassan Guled Stadium in Djibouti.

Uganda scored through Patrick Henry Kaddu, Mustafa Kizza and Taddeo Lwanga, while Somalia got their consolation goal Farhan Mohammed Ahmad.

Rwanda and Sudan are the two teams in the CECAFA region that will start their 2020 CHAN qualifying campaign in round 2. Rwanda will face the winner between Djibouti and Ethiopia, while Sudan takes on the winner between Tanzania and Kenya.

The CHAN tournament is played by locally based players playing in the domestic leagues of the respective countries. Morocco are the defending champions.
