Green Eagles, APR FC win as Kagame Cup kicks off

Guest side Green Eagles FC and APR FC made winning starts as the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Club Championship kicked off in Kigali on Saturday.

The Zambian side Green Eagles defeated Heegan FC (Somalia) 2-0 in the first match played at the Kigali Stadium. Kennedy Musonda gave Green Eagles the lead before Spencer Sautu made it 2-0.

Uganda’s Proline FC making their debut in the regional tournament fell to a late Thierry Manzi goal for Rwanda side APR FC in the second Group C match.

On Sunday defending champions Azam FC (Tanzania) will be in action against Rwanda’s Mukura FC in one of the Group B matches at the Huye Stadium. Uganda’s Premier League champions KCCA FC will battle Bandari FC (Kenya) in the same group.

Rwanda’s third team in the tournament Rayon Sports FC will face an acid test in the other game on Sunday against former African champions TP Mazambe FC (DR Congo), while KMC FC (Tanzania) also take on South Sudan’s Atlabara FC.

For the first time the regional tournament partly sponsored by Rwanda President Paul Kagame is attracting 16 teams.
