Djibouti have advanced to the group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers after picking a vital goalless draw away to Eswatini on Tuesday. After winning the first leg 2-1 last week, the Djibouti team played tight to hold on to a draw and re-write history to qualify for the first time for the group stage of the World Cup qualifiers.

Djibouti coach Julien Mettee said he is very happy with his players who have worked hard in the five months since he joined.

“I am so proud of the players. I have a lot of young players half of them in the U-23 team. I am so happy for the Djiboutians and for my President Waberi who believed in me,” added the coach.

While Djibouti qualified, Somalia’s Ocean Stars hopes were dashed after they lost 3-1 away to Zimbabwe in Harare.

Midfielder Marshall Munetsi, Admiral Muskwe and Khama Billiat scored for the home side, while Omar Abdullahi Mohamed netted Somalia’s goal.

The other teams that have qualified for the group stage of the qualifiers include; Equatorial Guinea, Malawi, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Mozambique.
