Ethiopia to host CECAFA U-23 Championship
The Ethiopia Football Federation (EFF) has confirmed that they will host the CECAFA U-23 Championship 2023.
Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director says during an online meeting with General Secretaries of different Member Associations held on Tuesday, the Ethiopian Football body made it clear they will host the CECAFA U-23 Championship.
“We are happy that Ethiopia will once again host the U-23 Championship like they did in 2021,” added Gecheo.
Bahiru Tilahun, the General Secretary of EFF later told Cecafonline that they will be ready to host the event in late July through to August in the capital Addis Ababa. In 2021 Ethiopia hosted the U-23 Championship in the town of Bahir Dar, and Tanzania emerged champions after stopping Burundi.
In the same meeting held on Tuesday, it was agreed that the Women’s Champions League for the Zone takes place August 12-26th in Uganda, while the CECAFA U-15 Boys Championship will take place November 4-18th in Uganda.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) also communicated that they will be ready to host the CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship June 3-17th, and the CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship November 26th to December 9th.
The meeting resolved that with the current political situation in Sudan, an alternate standby host is identified for the CECAFA Kagame Super Cup 2023 that Sudan had been awarded. Tanzania and Kenya confirmed they would be interested as the standby hosts, and will communicate their position after consultations with their members.
Gecheo also made it clear he will officially communicate with the Sudan Football Association (SFA) to formalize a new position, while he will also communicate with the Rwanda Federation to confirm if they will still host the Pan African Schools qualifiers for the Zone.
