Ethiopia have picked an advantage after a 3-0 away win against hosts South Africa in the first leg of the third round in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier.

The CECAFA representatives took a 16th minute lead through Eyerus Wendemu at the Wits Stadium on Friday. South Africa’s goalkeeper Kgomotso Musimango made a blunder giving Wendemu chance to score.

South Africa tried to fight back strongly to level matters, but the Coach Endalkachew Chaka’s team was up to the task and defended well.

In the second half Nathando Phala netted Ethiopia’s second goal after 57 minutes as the Bantwana team failed to tame the visitors constant attacks at goal.

At the stroke of full time Kumneger Kassa made it 3-0 for Ethiopia to make sure they take the advantage back to Addis Ababa for the second leg to be played in May.

“This is a very sweet win away from home. We need to keep working hard ahead of the second leg,” said Ethiopia’s coach Chaka after the match.
