Congo defeat hosts Rwanda in Pre-CHAN tournament match
The national team of the Republic of Congo has defeated hosts Rwanda 1-0 in the second Pre-CHAN Mini tournament match played at the Amahoro Stadium on Sunday.
Cervelie Ikouma netted the lone goal after 10 minutes when he headed in a well taken corner kick.
The Amavubi team tried to fight back but failed to convert their chances in-front of goal. Few days ago the two teams settled for a 2-2 draw in the first game played at the same stadium.
Both Rwanda and Congo used the matches to prepare ahead of the 6th Edition of the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) that kicks-off in Cameroon on January 16th.
“These matches have helped us try out a number of game situation aspects as we prepare for the tournament in Cameroon,” said Rwanda’s head coach Vincent Mashami.
It will be the fourth time that the Amavubi feature in the CHAN tournament. In 2011 and 2018 Rwanda failed to make it out of the group stage, while they managed to reach the quarter finals when they hosted in 2016.
The Amavubi of Rwanda who are placed in Group C of the CHAN tournament will open their campaign against arch-rivals Uganda Cranes on January 18th at the Stade de la Reunification in Douala.
Morocco are the reigning champions of the CHAN tournament.
