CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup: Eritrea, Uganda pick wins in classification matches

Eritrea and Uganda have qualified for the final classification match to determine which team will finish 5th/6th at the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup.

In the first classification match played today at the Bahir Dar Stadium, Eritrea defeated hosts Ethiopia 3-2 in penalty shoot outs after the game had ended 1-1 in normal time.

Ali Suleiman Ibrahim scored for Eritrea mid way the second half, while Ethiopia’s captain Abubeker Nasir Ahmed scored later to make sure the match is decided by penalty shoot-outs.

Eritrea’s substitute goalkeeper Kibrom Solom Haile was the star for the team as he saved two penalty kicks and also netted the winning penalty kick. The two teams had settled for a 3-3 draw in the group stage.

Uganda stopped guest side Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in the second match with Najib Yiga scoring the lone goal. The two teams had also played to a barren draw during the group stage.

On Tuesday the semi finals will take center stage with Tanzania facing surprise package South Sudan, while Burundi battle Kenya’s Emerging Stars.
