CECAFA teams tipped to Impress in 2019 AFCON – Musonye
The General Secretary of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), Nicholas Musonye has tipped teams from the region to impress during the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Africa’s biggest football showpiece will take place June 21st to July 19th in Egypt.
For the first time CECAFA will have four teams Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi featuring in the tournament which will have 24 teams for the first time.
“It is a new chapter having four teams from the Cecafa region qualify for the 2019 AFCON. It is not by chance that the four nations from our region have qualified, but hard work,” said Musonye.
Musonye said team like Uganda Cranes who played at the 2017 AFCON stand a much better chance to impress this time round because they have got the experience. “I also tip Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania to prove a point to the big guns at the tournament as well because they have star players who have been performing well in Club football,” reasoned Musonye.
“We are proud of the four teams for their hard-work and commitment in securing their positions. It is a dream of any African country to play at AFCON,” said Musonye.
He however called upon governments in the CECAFA region to continue supporting football if the region is to move to the next level like other counterparts in West and North Africa.
Eng. Moses Magogo, President of the Uganda FA made it clear that this time they are determined to make it to the knock out stage after failing to go out of the group in 2017. “Our team now has the experience and we have given them the kind of preparations they deserved,” added Magogo.
Emmanuel Amunike, coach of Tanzania also made it clear that he is confident his team will put up a good show. “We are going to cause some shocks in the tournament,” said the former African player of the Year.
