AFCON U-20 QUALIFIERS: Hosts Tanzania down Djibouti 6-1 in opening match

Tanzania’s national U-20 team, Ngorongoro Heroes came back from a goal down to beat Djibouti 6-1 in a Group A match at the on-going Cecafa Zonal Afcon U-20 qualifiers.

Djibouti took the lead after 15 minutes with a well taken free kick by Kassim Abourahman Kamil at the Black Rhino Academy play ground in Karatu town.

The Djibouti team playing with a highly passing game managed to hold their lead till half time.

But the Ngorongoro Heroes led by skipper Kevin Pius John who features for England’s Leicester City Academy fought back strongly to dominate the second half.

After 52 minutes Tanzania piled lots of pressure and Tepsi Theonasy leveled matters. The Ngorongoro Heroes looking well charged pushed forward for Abdul Hamis Suleiman to score a brace in a space of six minutes. He made it 2-1 after 65 minutes, before he again beat the Djibouti goalkeeper Yahya Houssein Youssouf after 71 minutes.

With the Djibouti team looking burnt out Tanzania increased their lead to 4-1 with Khleffin Hamdoum scoring after 82 minutes. Kassim Haruna made it 5-1 for Tanzania before Abdul Hamis Mohamed completed his hattrick when he converted a penalty after 88 minutes.

Action returns on Monday with Ethiopia facing kenya in a Group C match, while South Sudan battle Uganda in a Group B match, all at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the body that governs football in Africa, the best two teams at the regional qualifier will qualify to represent the Cecafa region at the 2021 Afcon for U-20s to take place in Mauritania.
